Creative New Zealand has announced the applications for the Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund to support emerging Maori artists or practitioners at an early stage of their career to undertake an art project.
The Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund supports emerging Maori artists or practitioners at an early stage of their career to:
- research and create work
- present and distribute their work nationally and internationally
- develop skills including mentoring, internships, residencies workshops and conferences
- undertake community or collaborative projects
- undertake projects with international connections
- publish catalogues, monographs, journals, books and critical writing.
Funding Information
Amount: $5,000 to $20,000
What they fund?
They are particularly interested in activities that support:
- Maori artists and practitioners to learn and extend their nga toi Maori practice knowledge, skills and experience, and progress their careers in Aotearoa and internationally
- New Zealanders to access and experience the Maori arts in communities and regions across Aotearoa.
- They are also interested in projects or programmes of activity that:
- are by, with and/or for young people up to the age of 18
- involve the innovative and cost-effective use of digital technologies to create high-quality New Zealand work and/or to engage and interact with audiences.
What they don’t Fund?
- Activities that another Creative New Zealand funding programme or initiative is designed to support.
- Activities that are the responsibility of other government agencies.
- Projects, project phases or programmes of activity that have received support from Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage via the Arts and Culture COVID Recovery Programme.
- Core education resources and activities that are part of the curriculum and course of study in New Zealand, including early learning, school or further education.
- Game design, fashion design and commercial design.
- Feature films, short films and film/screen development activities.
- Purchase of capital items, renovating or buying buildings, or restoring marae.
- Activities that are part of the core business of a Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO), Territorial Local Authority (TLA) or Council Controlled Organisation (CCO).
Eligibility Criteria
- To apply for the Toi Tipu Toi Rea – Emerging Maori Artist Fund, you must be:
- Tangata Whenua Maori, or your proposed project must be managed or directed by Maori
- a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (each individual).
- New Zealand-based organisations can apply but the organisation must be Maori-led. If an organisation is applying for funding on behalf of an individual, that person must also be Maori. International Maori-led arts organisations can apply but the application must show direct benefit to New Zealand arts.
- To be eligible for Creative New Zealand funding:
- Your project or activities must directly benefit New Zealand arts, artists or practitioners.
- You must have a track record of experience and success — this means you must have:
- recognition from peers or experts
- achieved a degree of critical or sales success
- specialised training or practical experience.
