The U.S. Mission to India is pleased to announce Air Quality Hackathon Grant Program.
The Air Quality Hackathon will bring together (20) teams, (3) participants per group from across India to brainstorm for two days and find practical solutions to improve air quality. The solutions will be shared and implemented to the extent possible during a follow-on campaign with school communities and NGO partners. Results of the implementation phase will be shared with the government and civil society partners. A survey to measure the impact of the intervention program will be conducted during the project. Teams with the best results from pre- to post-intervention will be documented and recognized in a final culminating event.
Project Goals
Air pollution continues to be a dire problem in India and in the Kolkata metro area. While people know the air is bad, they don’t know the effects it could have on their long-term heath, and they don’t know what to do about it. The goal of this project is to heighten awareness of the specific dangers of air pollution and to develop innovative ideas and solutions to these dangers and effect behavior change. By sharing solutions in the wider community, they hope to give people agency with concrete ideas about how to address air pollution. If the solutions are successful, then they also want to propose their adoption to government and civil society organizations.
Objectives
- The Air Quality Hackathon will host together (20) teams, (3) participants per team to brainstorm for two days and find practical solutions for improving air quality in the Kolkata region.
- NGO partners and students representing at least ten school communities will test the impact of the practical solutions within the larger community within six months after the hackathon concludes.
- Participating high schools will be encouraged to offer credit to participating students (as they have done in the past) for the co-curricular activities taken on by the students.
- Results will be made public and presented to policy makers and government and civil society leaders within 12 months of the hackathon. Successful solutions might then be implemented on a larger scale.
