UN-Habitat invites Expressions of Interest from Not-for–Profit Organizations and Governmental Institutions to conduct a waste assessment in Kiambu County by applying Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT), an assessment tool for city’s municipal solid waste management performance through SDG indicator monitoring methodology developed by UN-Habitat.
In addition to this, COVID-19 impact assessment in waste management chain will be conducted. Such waste management survey will include organizing a local stakeholder meeting as well as developing action plan and potential project through identifying the key intervention areas and infrastructure investment.
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in African cities affects the vulnerable, especially informal waste pickers in hazardous conditions without sufficient protection. Protecting those people from infection is the important measures for preventing the further spread of and mitigates the wider impacts of COVID-19.
UN-Habitat, in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will conduct data collection surveys to support municipal solid waste management, through analyzing the impact of COVID-19 and the linkages to opportunities for JICA’s potential support for urban areas in Kiambu. Building upon the “Waste Wise Cities”, and the established African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP), this project aims to conduct a survey to understand the impact of COVID-19 on Solid Waste Management; UN-Habitat informs the countermeasures toward the challenges, through conducting basic data collection on risks and idea of infection control in solid waste management.
Funding Information
- UN-Habitat will contribute financial resources towards Agreements of Cooperation of up to USD 33,000.
Project Activities
The activities expected under this project include but are not limited to the following key elements:
- A waste data collection and monitoring survey through applying WaCT in Kiambu county;
- Calculation of municipal solid waste received by recovery facilities in Kenya;
- An impact assessment of the COVID-19 through interviews to key waste management stakeholders using the questionnaire that JICA and UN-Habitat developed;
- Coordination of a Local Stake holder Workshop – waste flow analysis and identification of policy intervention and infrastructure investment gaps based on the results of WaCT application; and
- Report on action plan and potential project development on waste management in the county to build back better from COVID-19 impacts.
Expression of Interest
The EOI should contain, but not be limited to the following:
- Overall experience of the organization in the area of interest;
- A short conceptual proposal on how the organization plans to develop and implement this initiative;
- The support/contribution the organization is willing to make including, cash and in kind; (contribution in terms of staff time, office space and equipment and other support in cash and in-kind should be expressed in monetary terms)
- A certified true copy of the original Audited Account Statement for the last two years and latest annual report; and
- Governance and organizational structure; experience and qualifications of key professional staff and infrastructure facilities of the organization.
