The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in collaboration with the General Directorate of Environment and Sustainable Development, is inviting submissions for CORE GEF Fund 7 to support the community actions initiated by local populations with a view to contributing to the fight against the degradation of the global environment.
It is executed by a National Coordination (CN) and a National Steering Committee (CNP) composed of representatives of the UNDP, the Government, research centers, Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and the private sector. The CNP selects projects on the basis of criteria of consistency with the priorities of the GEF, the UNDP and the Gabonese State in terms of sustainable development. The PMF/FEM is based on a participatory approach which highlights the empowerment of local communities in the execution of projects. These communities collaborate with technical services and local authorities for better articulation of projects with local and national development policies. The priority areas of the PMF-GEF are biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, control of organic pollutants, waste management, international waters and capacity building.
Objectives
- The PMF/GEF Gabon strategy for OP 7 is structured around four strategic initiatives:
- Community conservation of biodiversity
- Reduction of pressures, restoration and conservation of biodiversity, particularly mangroves and on the outskirts of protected areas
- Promotion of the community approach for the participatory management of protected areas
- Sustainable agriculture and fishing
- Maintaining the deforestation rate close to 0%; identification, mapping and preservation of ecosystems with high carbon sequestration potential; support for initiatives to recognize community protected areas
- Application of good practices in Agroforestry and Assisted Natural Regeneration (RNA).
- Restoration of restored degraded agricultural land (hectares)
- Support for smallholder farmers to achieve national land degradation neutrality targets
- Capacity building and settlement of villagers through the practice of new agricultural methods
- Promotion of sustainable urban solutions
- Promotion of initiatives supporting linkages and partnerships for sustainable food production practices (such as diversification and sustainable intensification) and supply chain management (especially SMEs)
- Promotion of community-based urban solutions/approaches (including chemicals and waste management, energy, transport, watershed protection, ecosystem services and biodiversity) deployed
- Promoting initiatives to equip communities with improved capacities to promote integrated community-driven solutions for low-emission and resilient urban development
- Policy and planning dialogue platforms between CSOs, government and the private sector
- Organization of dialogues between CSOs, government and the private sector organized to support the voice and representation of the community in the development of national and subnational policies
- Support for the representation of social inclusion groups (indigenous peoples, women, youth, people with disabilities, farmers, other marginalized groups) with meaningful participation in dialogue platforms
- Increase in community representation through dialogue platforms CSOs-government-private sector
- Strengthening social inclusion
- Promotion of initiatives promoting the leadership of people belonging to vulnerable social groups (youth, women and people living with disabilities)
- Promotion of initiatives that improve the participation of women in decision-making in the governance of natural resources
- Promotion of initiatives aimed at supporting indigenous peoples in terms of programming and management at country level
- Promotion of initiatives that illustrate models of engagement of people with disabilities
- Community conservation of biodiversity
Funding Information
- The maximum amount per project proposal is set at 50,000 USD for projects whose duration Support for smallholder farmers to achieve national land degradation neutrality targets varies between 12 and 24 months.
Geographic Locations
- The priority niches and landscapes of this call are located in the provinces of Estuaire, Ngounié, Moyen Ogooué and Ogooué-Lolo. The zone basins encompassing i) the entire surface area of mangroves and mudflat areas of Mondah Bay in Akanda National Park and the right bank of the Komo (including the entire surface area of Greater Libreville and the commune of Kango) as well as the buffer zone located to the south of Pongara park; ii) The Waka-Lopé buffer zone sheltering the departments of Tsamba Magotsi, Ogoulou and Offoué-Onoye ; iii) the northern zone of the Bas-Ogooué Ramsar site bringing together lakes Gomé, Nkomié and Azingo located in the buffer zone of the Wonga Wongué reserve and the southern lakes, Evaro, Onangué, Ezanga and Onguemoué, are the priorities of this call.
