Small Grants Programme (SGP) is seeking proposals from competent civil society organizations active in Peru and the Andean region for the participatory and multisectoral development and establishment of an Indigenous Mountain adaptation and global South-South exchange programme. Mountain countries targeted for this work will be targeted with a grant funding of up to $150,000.
The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) is a corporate programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 1992. SGP grant-making in over 125 countries promotes community-based innovation, capacity development, and empowerment through sustainable development projects of communities local civil society organizations with special consideration for indigenous peoples, women, and youth.
Goals
The goal of the Indigenous Mountain Peoples adaptation programme and global South-South exchange platform is to:
- increase awareness and further the development of an International Network of Mountain Indigenous Peoples, and develop a practical set of tools and procedures to exchange South-South experiences between mountain indigenous peoples on the subject of community conserved territories and areas (ICCAs);
- build the capacity and network of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) living in mountain environments, local CSOs, and other relevant stakeholders to implement tools and procedures to support community-based adaptation (CBA) to climate change at the global level;
- develop collaboration with government and relevant agencies for the exchange of positive experiences and knowledge of mountain sustainable development planning developed at the local and national level in support of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 2020 Aichi target 11 (protected and conserved areas), target 14 (ecosystem services), and target 18 (traditional knowledge).
Eligibility Criteria
- This call for proposal is only open to trusted non-profit entities with high reputation who are working or will be ready to work in Peru, and countries of the Andean region.
- It is expected that the selected grantee organization is capable to undertake the following activities as part the project:
- Facilitating foundational discussion to get commitment of key mountain indigenous peoples and CSO stakeholders as well as the government and support development agencies to participate, even take the lead in key aspects of the project to make the overall effort owned by mountain communities.
- Partnerships with relevant organizations, projects or programs which have requisite experience and expertise, including working models, of the monitoring and database system to be shared using a South-South and Triangular exchange approach;
- Supporting CSO-government dialogues through a lead partner country with the aim to get agreement on adapting a working model and a collaborative approach to its implementation to promote progress in the planning, policy-making and action needed to meet the country’s mountain adaptation goals;
- Organizing capacity-building activities, in both technical and leadership aspects, as well as in communication and knowledge management, to effectively and efficiently manage the agreed global South-South mountain exchange system according to defined roles, or as teams;
- Supporting the networking of local stakeholders, including with the scientific, academic and research community, in support of the monitoring and database system;
- Facilitating the development of a plan of action by stakeholders for the sustainability of mountain socio-ecological systems;
- Initiating activities to share experience, expertise, technology and lessons learned of the project with other mountain countries.
- Applicants to support the international network of mountain indigenous peoples will be able to propose a management and service provision cost based on the identified tasks and deliverables that cannot be covered by its own co-financing (in cash and in-kind) which will not be more than 25% of the overall costs. Entities are expected to have a demonstrated management capacity backed up by relevant technical staff and financial management skills as well as show value for money for the proposed actions and ensure this is reflected in the requested fees.
