The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program (GEF SGP) is seeking proposals for the Call for Projects for Tunisian NGOs.
Implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the Small Grants Program (SGP) of the Global Environment Facility ( GEF) provides grants to NonGovernmental Organizations and Community-Based Organizations (NGOs/CBOs) in developing countries to enable them to address global environmental challenges, while meeting local sustainable development needs.
Areas
- This call for projects covers the following three areas of intervention:
- The conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity,
- The fight against climate change,
- The fight against soil degradation.
Purpose
- The overall objective of this call for projects is to support community initiatives that will raise awareness and contribute to the resolution of environmental problems that occur at the local level while ensuring a strong involvement of young people and women. Thus, projects submitted under this call must propose initiatives related to:
- The promotion of environmental culture
- The implementation of concrete actions on the ground for the fight against relevant and identified environmental problems (climate change, terrestrial and/or marine biodiversity (BD), soil degradation)
- The promotion of learning, training and enhancement of traditional know-how eco-friendly
- The development of climate-resilient value chains
- Support for the development of Startups operating in the field of agriculture or the environment
- The promotion of sustainable models of the blue economy
- The contribution to the preservation of species threatened with extinction or the enhancement of species introduced.
- To give some examples of this vision of local environmental development, here are some examples for inspiration:
- Support the development and improvement of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship linked to the sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources, focusing in particular on vulnerable groups, such as women, people with disabilities, youth at risk (training, start-up financing, including bio-enterprises, access to energy for productive use, etc.);
- Support and encourage sustainable agricultural production and supply chain to improve food security, provide targeted support to small farmers, provide access to drinking or irrigation water, including with renewable energy and recovery water (agroforestry, agro-biodiversity, family and urban gardens, agro-ecology, urban agriculture, etc.); vs. Support initiatives related to the conservation of protected areas;
- Promote traditional crops and practices that protect the environment to improve sustainable land management, fisheries and food security;
- Support community-based management of marine resources, including sustainable local fisheries focused on food security and stock enhancement
- Community wildlife management, including combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade;
- Deployment of renewable energy and low greenhouse gas emission technologies for productive use, particularly in rural and vulnerable communities.
- Support the participation of local communities in multi-stakeholder dialogues at local, regional and national levels (including through remote dialogues) to provide inputs to sustainable development policies and programs, in particular with regard to the protection of the environment and good management of natural resources;
- Facilitate local community access to social and technological innovation and entrepreneur networks at local, regional and national levels;
Funding Information
- The awarding of grants under this call for projects will follow the operational guidelines of the GEF SGP. The maximum grant amount for each project should not exceed USD 50,000.
- As the funding average is USD 25,000, the funding cap will only be granted to projects with a significant and confirmed scope.
- The maximum duration of each project is 18 months.
Eligibility Criteria
- Project proposals must:
- Be designed and submitted by a Civil Society Organization or a Grassroots Community Organization under Tunisian law
- Be related to the areas of intervention and the objectives of the call
- Rely on community participation during the design, implementation and project monitoring;
- Be implemented in the landscapes specified within the framework of this call for projects
- Take into consideration the gender approach and involve young people;
- Have a clear and concrete impact on local communities and on the conservation of landscapes;
- Contribute with co-financing in kind and in cash;
- Be completed within a maximum period of 18 months.
