The Department of Social Protection is providing funding to support anti-poverty groups to organise local, regional or national activities to promote awareness of the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and to mark this day in 2023.
“Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is the solemn duty.” These words were expressed by Joseph Wresinski on 17th October 1987, at the Trocadéro Plaza, Paris which is where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was originally signed in 1948. Since then, on 17 October throughout the world, all those who reject poverty and exclusion mark this day, to express their solidarity and their commitment to ensure that everyone’s dignity and freedom are respected.

Purpose of the Funding
- The opportunity to participate or take part in dignified work: The opportunity to participate in ways which are meaningful to them or take part in work which people feel confident and comfortable in, in which they are respected, paid sufficiently, and which pertains to their interests. All should better recognise all the ways people contribute to society and their families, etc. outside of paid employment.
- Zero Discrimination: Protection from socio- economic discrimination.
- A living wage and minimum income standards: Everyone should have access to a good standard of living regardless of background or if they are in a job. Everyone should have enough to satisfy their needs and feel equal to others.
- Affordable housing: This addresses the current housing crisis and to ensure everyone has access to a safe home.
Funding Information
The maximum amount of funding which can be awarded to any one project is up to €3,000.00, with a limitation of only one proposal per organisation under this initiative.
What Activities can be Funded
The event must be a once-off initiatives with a national, regional or local focus and must aim:
- to create public awareness of the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
- to create public awareness of poverty in Ireland.
- to involve people at risk of, or experiencing poverty.
- to express solidarity with the fight to eradicate poverty globally.
What activities cannot be funded?
Please note that the scheme cannot fund:
- Annual reports, newsletters or other promotional materials.
- Conferences, seminars, or similar.
- Research or policy analysis.
- Salary costs for core staff.
- A group’s ongoing project or running costs such as rent, utilities etc.
- Work that has already happened or that has already been funded by other agencies or departments.
- Any other project or costs outside of the scope of the guidelines set down by the Department of Social Protection for this programme.
Eligibility Criteria
- This funding is open to anti-poverty organisations and groups working with people experiencing poverty at national or local level in the Republic of Ireland.
- The Department of Social Protection will NOT accept applications from profit making or trading companies, individuals, local and community development companies, local authorities or statutory bodies or any bodies outside the Republic of Ireland.
- Please note: groups that have received funding under this initiative previously must have had all necessary documentation and activities satisfactorily completed for any previous activities, otherwise funding for 2023 may not be considered.
