The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is inviting civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), non-profit organizations, private-sector associations, and for-profit businesses and financial institutions (FIs), including banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs), to apply for grants for “Private Sector Development Activity”.
The USAID Private Sector Development Activity funded by USAID and implemented by Nathan Associates Inc. (Nathan) is a 3-year program that aims to increase broad-based economic opportunities in Myanmar by creating more inclusive economic governance rules and processes and increasing access to finance for emerging economic actors.
Objectives
- Promote and improve inclusive and transparent economic policy-making and implementation processes;
- Organize public awareness activities on key economic policy and commercial law issues;
- Increase civil-society, private-sector and public-sector capacity to engage in evidence-based advocacy on key economic policy and commercial law reform initiatives;
- Conduct research on key economic policy and commercial law issues for the purpose of disseminating through public dialogues;
- Encourage economic reforms in States and Regions;
- Encourage economic reforms that benefit women and ethnic-minorities;
- Provide business development services in response to needs of local businesses;
- Expand access to finance of small and medium enterprises and micro-business, and mobilization of savings; and,
- Support financial-sector development and reform, including for banks, non-bank FIs, insurance and financial literacy.
Funding Information
- This grant solicitation is open for one year (December 17, 2015 – December 16, 2016, 5 PM local Myanmar time) for a grant up to a maximum amount of USD $100,000, subject to the availability of funds to be implemented over a 3- to 12-month period.
- Grant concepts that propose a budget of more than $100,000 or more than a 12-month period of time will not be considered at this time.
Eligibility Criteria
- Grants are open to all local organizations in Myanmar.
- US based organizations are also eligible to apply for grants.
- International, non-US, organizations that are permitted to operate in Myanmar may also apply for grants.
- Grantees, particularly local organizations, may use the grants to build their own staff and institutional capacity in achieving the above objectives.
- Organizations with limited experience working with grants are encouraged to apply.
- International grantees should put a strong emphasis on enhancing local capacity in utilizing the grants.

The USAID Private Sector Development Activity will use a two-step application process
- Step 1: Submission of a Concept Paper and Review of Eligible Concept Papers
- Step 2: Submission of a Full Application, Budget and Implementation Plan.
