The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), United States of Food and Agriculture (USDA) is currently accepting applications for its Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), a competitive grant program that will provide funding for fundamental and applied research, education, and extension to address food and agricultural sciences, as amended by the 2014 Farm Bill under section 7401.
Priority Areas
The legislation directed the Secretary to award grants to address priorities in U.S. agriculture in the following six Farm Bill priority areas:
- Plant health and production and plant products;
- Animal health and production and animal products;
- Food safety, nutrition, and health;
- Bioenergy, natural resources, and environment;
- Agriculture systems and technology; and
- Agriculture economics and rural communities.
Award Information
Estimated Total Program Funding is $18,000,000.

- 862 Land-Grant Institutions,
- 1890 Land-Grant Institutions,
- 1994 Land-Grant Institutions,
- For-profit Organizations Other Than Small Businesses,
- Hispanic-Serving Institutions,
- Individuals,
- Native American Tribal Orgs, not Federally recognized Tribal Governments,
- Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) IRS status, other than Institutions of Higher Ed,
- Nonprofits without 501(c)(3) IRS status, other than Institutions of Higher Ed,
- Private Institutions of Higher Ed,
- Small Business,
- State Agricultural Experiment Stations,
- State Controlled Institutions of Higher Ed
