Do you have a great idea for your community? Through the Neighborhood Small Grants (NSG) program, small grants of up to $500 are available for people to lead a project in their neighborhood.
Examples of past projects include multicultural events, block parties, community gardens, and skill-sharing workshops.
Funding Information
Please consider the following when calculating your project budget:
- Grant requests must be under $500.
- Grant money may be used to pay people for services (also called honorariums) to help with the project. An example may be a carpenter or face painter. Total honorarium(s) may not be more than $350 per project.
- When creating a project budget, you should determine the actual cost of items to be used, and think resourcefully about how to obtain materials through borrowing or donations.
- You are responsible for keeping expense receipts to account for all project costs.
What do they fund?
Responsive Neighborhood Small Grants are awarded to projects that meet one or more of the following goals:
- Connect and engage neighbors
- Examples: Block parties or emergency preparedness planning sessions
- Share neighbors’ skills and knowledge within the community
- Examples: a free yoga lesson for the community or a community kitchen where participants exchange their cooking skills and share a meal together
- Build sense of belonging and connection
- Examples: An Indigenous plant walking tour led by an Elder or a community clean-up event
- Respect and celebrate diversity
- Examples: A multicultural fashion show, a story telling project that involves seniors and youth, or an acrylic painting workshop open to all ages and skill levels
Criteria
Applications must also meet the following criteria:
- Projects must stay within guidelines for physical distancing including a six-person limit for in-person gatherings.
- Two applicants living in the neighborhood but from different households are required on every application. Both applicants are responsible for managing the grant money.
- An applicant can apply for one Neighborhood Small Grants project per year. Co-applicants can only be used on two applications.
- Your project must be free, accessible and welcoming to all. You may not charge entrance fees, request donations, or fundraise for other projects and/or organizations.
- You must begin your project after the grant decision is made. Projects are not supported retroactively.
- Preference will be given to new projects or those that have been funded for fewer than three years in a row.
Who do they fund?
The Responsive Neighborhood Small Grants program is open to anyone living in the Greater Victoria area. The Quadra Village Community Centre is the implementing organization of the RNSG program and is operating the program in partnership with the Oakland’s Community Association, Burnside Gorge Community Association, and North Park Neighborhood Association. Youth-led projects are encouraged!
