Women’s Fund Asia (WFA) is seeking applications for its “Strengthening Feminist Movement” grantmaking programme.
Under the Strengthening Feminist Movements grantmaking programme, Women’s Fund Asia supports women’s and trans rights activists, groups, and networks working at the local, sub-national, and national levels.
The common threads that run through the grants under this programme are:
- Promoting feminist principles and a rights-based perspective in women’s rights/trans rights work in the region, the key components of which are decision-making, agency, and voices;
- Strengthening the leadership of women and trans people, especially the second-line leadership; and
- Networking and collaborations among groups and activists working at a sub-national and national levels.
Grant Types
- Organisations, groups and networks can apply for either an institutional and/or programmatic grant:
- Institutional: This includes institutional and administrative costs including salaries, rent, audit, and other operational costs. Institutional grants can also be used to fill funding gaps of ongoing/new programmes and collaborations, as per the need of the groups.
- Programmatic: This includes support for specific programmes/projects, whether ongoing or new initiatives.
- Individuals can apply for Programmatic grants only.
Funding Information
- Organisational grants will range from USD 5,000 – 10,000 for a maximum period of one year. [Note: For applicants who have not been supported by WFA previously, the maximum amount for an organisational grant is USD 7,000.]
- Individual grants will range from USD 1,000 – 5,000 for a period of a maximum of a year.
Eligibility Criteria
- The call is open to organisations, networks, and activists.
- The current call is open to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
- Organisations and networks who fulfil ALL the following criteria can apply:
- Must have advancement of women and trans rights as a focus of their vision, mission, and programmes.
- Must be committed to feminist principles and rights-based approaches.
- Must have an annual budget of USD 50,000 or less.
- Must have women’s/trans leadership in its governance and staff. This means:
- The board should be led by a woman or a trans person.
- The board should compose at least 60 percent women and/or trans people.
- A woman or trans person must head the organisation (staff).
- The staff should compose of at least 60 percent women and/or trans people.
- Must be based in the 17 countries specified. Organisations registered in, based in, and/or working outside of the specified countries are not eligible for applying for support under this programme.
- Must be able to receive grants from foreign sources in compliance with their country’s laws and policies.
- Individual activists who fulfil ALL the following criteria can apply:
- Must have direct linkages with women’s and trans rights movements sub-nationally or nationally.
- Must be nationals of AND be located in the 17 mandated countries.
- Only women and trans persons can apply.
- Women’s Fund Asia does NOT fund:
- Groups whose vision and mission does not include advancement of women’s rights and/or trans rights.
- Groups working through strategies which are violative of women and trans rights (such as raid and rescue, anti-sex work, and anti-abortion among others).
- Groups whose primary purpose is service provision, humanitarian assistance, charity, poverty alleviation programmes (such as micro finance and income generation), education, sponsorships, scholarships, literacy, and skills development programmes.
- Groups directly/indirectly related or connected with elections and election campaigning.
- Groups directly affiliated with political parties, academic/educational, and/or religious institutions.
- For-profit groups.
- Groups registered in countries outside of the listed 17 countries, and not directly working in the countries their proposed work is based in.
- Local branches, chapters, subsidiaries, or country offices of multilateral organisations, international organisations, international non-government organisations (INGOs), and international financial organisations.
- Buying land or any construction activity.
