Apply for Western Balkans Environmental Media Grant 2025

CFAs: Local Transformation Projects to support Independent Media 2025

Deadline: 30-Oct-2025

The Western Balkans Environmental Media Grant 2025 has opened for organizations and journalist networks across the region to boost environmental reporting from its biodiverse landscapes.

Crafted by Earth Journalism Network, this grant aims to help local media tell the story of threatened ecosystems—like mountain forests, wetlands, and karst formations—and the human health and livelihood risks tied to environmental degradation.

The grant will fund a single organization selected from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, or Kosovo. The chosen grantee will receive €10,000 and mentorship support as they design and roll out a year-long media or journalism project starting in January 2026. Their work should raise awareness, promote nature-based solutions, and strengthen regional storytelling on climate, biodiversity, and resource use challenges.

Projects must avoid overt advocacy or political campaigning, instead focusing on narrative, investigation, and capacity building. Ideal proposals will deepen the technical strengths of local environmental journalism and help build networks among media, science, and civil society. Applicants may propose work in English or in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, or Montenegrin.

This grant provides a timely platform for media actors to amplify environment coverage in the Western Balkans and foster accountability, knowledge sharing, and new forms of cross-border collaboration around conservation stories.
