The Press and Society Institute (IPYS) announces the 2023 edition of the “Javier Valdez” Latin American Investigative Journalism Award, aimed at stimulating professional excellence in this specialty.
The organizers want to encourage greater transparency from governments, businesses and the media. The award is open to all research topics on matters of public interest.
Prize Information
- The winner receives a prize of US $5,000 (five thousand US dollars).
Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists can apply in their personal capacity or as a research team, with one or several works published in a communication medium in Latin America and the Caribbean, either in Spanish, Portuguese or English. Research teams will designate a representative upon registration.
- Works published in any media print, radio, television or electronic media, certifying their issuance during that period. No media or companies compete nor are books admitted. Investigations disseminated without a signature, or under a pseudonym, will be admitted with a certification of authorship issued by the medium. Associations, civil society organizations, academic institutions or the media can apply for one or more works by a journalist if they meet all the requirements of the bases.
- Solo journalists or journalistic teams who consider that their work, the product of their own research, has contributed to the transparency of public affairs can apply for the award . Journalistic or civil society organizations can recommend to IPYS the application of a work that, due to its excellence, deserves to be reviewed by the qualifying jury. Applications can be registered in the name of a representative of the journalistic team, or using a pseudonym, in case there are security conditions that require it.
Award Criteria
- The Qualifying Jury will confirm, first of all, that the work presented is an investigation, that is, that it discovered one or several relevant news events from its own and systematic journalistic search. The Executive Summary required in these bases is one of the sources of information for the jury. The importance and impact of the finding will be valued as virtues, as well as the qualities of the search that led to the discovery.
