Internews is calling applications for Media Training, a two-day training that will introduce journalists to take on environmental issues through the lens of their respective beats, and provide tools and resources to improve the quality of environmental reporting in the country.
Internews in Malaysia and the Earth Journalism Network invite journalists from Malaysia to apply for their Environmental Journalism Workshop, to be held in Selangor from March 16-18 2022.
About the Program
- They will host this two-day training in-person at Kinrara Espira Resort in Puchong, Selangor.
- This is a FREE training. Internews will bear the travel, accommodation, and meal costs of selected participants.
- During the training, participants will expand their understanding of the cross-sectoral themes in environmental stories; learn how to identify alternative sources, underreported and potential topics as well as techniques to enhance environmental reporting, regardless of their beats.
- Sessions will be carried out in a combination of classroom-style learning and hands-on exercises and interactive discussions with trainers and speakers. In addition, participants will gain new skills in using key resources and tools to enable them to improve story pitches and write impactful environmental stories. Participants will also have the chance to network and collaborate with journalists from different states.
- Participants can join a field trip to an Orang Asli village in Selangor on the last day. Through a guided hike and cooking class, participants will learn more about the traditional knowledge of Indigenous communities and their relationship with nature for livelihoods and culture.
- They will be providing 4 story grants worth EUR1,900 each to selected participants upon completion of the training.
Objectives

- To provide key tools and resources to improve the quality of environmental reporting in the country.
Eligibility Criteria
- The training is open to journalists (covering any beat) from Malaysia. Those based outside of the Klang Valley are especially encouraged to apply.
- They welcome applications from full-time and freelance journalists from print, television, online and/or radio in any local language. They also encourage women and early-career journalists to apply.
- Please note:
- Selected participants must commit to attending all two days of the workshop (check-in on March 15)
- The field trip on the final day (March 18) is optional but they highly encourage participants to attend.
- The training will be conducted in Bahasa Melayu and English.
- Successful participants will be notified by March 5, 2022.
