The Gabo Foundation, within the framework of its alliance with the Bancolombia and Sura Groups and their subsidiaries in Latin America, opens the eleventh call for the Gabo Journalism Award, which this year has the slogan Journalism lives.
Through this statement, the Foundation and its international Governing Council seek to recognize and highlight the excellent journalism that is practiced in Latin America and that makes its way in the face of threats, attacks and questioning. At a time when disinformation campaigns and accusations against journalists contribute to the weakening of democracy in Latin America, the Foundation created by Gabriel García Márquez 28 years ago wants to claim the right to freedom of expression and access to information, and contribute to the construction of an active citizenship.
The Gabo 2023 Prize will be awarded based on the judging of journalistic works published for the first time in Spanish or Portuguese between June 7, 2022 and March 21, 2023.
Categories
The works submitted to the contest will be awarded in five categories, as follows:
- Text: for the author or authors of the best written journalism work.
- Photography: for the author or authors of the best photographic coverage work.
- Audio: for the author or authors of the best sound journalism work.
- Image: for the author or authors of the best journalistic work in audiovisual support, video, animation or other forms of digital visualization.
- Coverage: for the author or authors of the best work on news, research and current affairs in any type of support or language.
Prize Information
- The winners of each contest category must previously accept and commit to participate in the award ceremony and the activities of the Gabo Festival.
- In each of the five categories, the winner will receive as a trophy a copy of the sculpture Gabriel, created by the Colombian artist Antonio Caro, an accreditation diploma and the gross sum of thirty-five million Colombian pesos ($35,000,000), the which will be paid, once the applicable taxes have been deducted, by bank transfer to an account in your name, within forty-five (45) days following the award.
Judging Criteria
- The works registered in the different categories and received in a complete and appropriate manner, according to verification by the Technical Secretariat of the Gabo Award, will be put to the consideration of the independent juries within pre-selection committees and groups of at least three (3) final juries. that the Gabo Foundation will designate. Each group or final panel of jurors will choose, through a motivated decision, a list of ten (10) nominees, three (3) finalists and one (1) winner for their category, in accordance with the regulations that establish the bases of the award. To evaluate and make their decision, the juries of the categories will be based solely on the materials received and will follow the following essential criteria:
- The narrative quality and news value of the stories.
- Innovation or originality in the way of telling stories and approaching audiences.
- Own research to unravel hidden facts or understand complex processes.
- Journalistic independence and professional ethical values reflected in the works.
- The plurality, contrast and verification of the sources used.
- The precision and rigor in the treatment of the facts.
- Additionally, they will take into account:
- The clarity and depth of the story.
- The risk and difficulty of telling true facts.
- Commitment to information quality and the idea of public service in journalism.
- The impact generated by the publication of the work.
