The Gabo Foundation is seeking entries for the 10th Edition of the Gabo Award to promote benchmarks of excellence, ethical coherence and innovation for Ibero-American journalism that contribute to active and better informed citizens, essential for the construction of solid and sustainable democracies.
The Gabo Award has the support of an alliance committed to freedom of expression and good journalism, of the Gabo Foundation with the Bancolombia and SURA groups, and their subsidiaries in Latin America.
The Governing Council, through a supported decision, will choose as the winner of the Gabo Award in this category, which will not have nominees, a journalist or journalistic team of recognized independence, integrity and commitment to the ideals of public service of journalism, who deserves to be highlighted and set as an example for his entire career or for an exceptional contribution to the search for truth or the advancement of journalism.
Categories
The works presented to the contest will be awarded in 5 categories, as follows:
- Text: for the author or authors of the best written journalism work.
- Photography: for the author or authors of the best photographic coverage work.
- Audio: for the author or authors of the best sound journalism work.
- Image: for the author or authors of the best journalistic work in audiovisual support, video, animation or other forms of digital visualization.
- Coverage: for the author or authors of the best work on news, research and current affairs in any type of support or language.
Award Information
- The winners of each contest category must previously accept and commit to participate in the award ceremony and the activities of the Gabo Festival.
- In each of the five categories, the winner will receive as a trophy a copy of the Gabriel sculpture, created by the Colombian artist Antonio Caro, an accreditation diploma and the gross sum of thirty-five million Colombian pesos ($35,000,000), the which will be paid, once the applicable taxes have been deducted, by bank transfer to an account in your name, within forty-five (45) days following the award ceremony.
- In the event that a work of collective authorship is awarded, only the person who appears as a representative of the work team will be invited to participate in the award ceremony and the activities of the Gabo Festival, and will receive the transfer of the respective money. However, the other co-authors mentioned in the registration document may receive through that representative copies of the diploma that certifies them as winners.
Rules
- Prizes will not be divided.
- Positions in the list of 10 nominees may be declared vacant.
- The act of registration commits the applicants to the rules and results of the contest and entails express authorization for the Gabo Foundation to publish from the closing date of registration onwards, in any language and for any territory, on the website dedicated to the Prize or in other digital, printed or audiovisual media, directly or through third parties, for essentially informative and educational purposes, all or part of the competing works, especially those of the winners and nominees. Said authorization does not imply the transfer of intellectual property rights.
- Works in which the employees, members of the Board of Directors or members of the Governing Council of the Gabo Foundation have participated may not compete or be awarded.
Criteria
The works registered in the different categories and received in a complete and appropriate manner, as verified by the Technical Secretariat of the Prize, will be put to the consideration of the independent juries within the pre-selection committees and groups of at least three (3) final juries that will designate the Gabo Foundation. Each final group or panel of jurors will choose a list of ten (10) nominees and one (1) winner for their category by reasoned decision, in accordance with the regulations that establish these bases.
To evaluate and make their decision, the juries of the categories will be based solely on the materials received and will follow the following essential criteria:
- The narrative quality and news value of the stories.
- Innovation or originality in the way of telling stories and approaching the audience.
- Own research to unravel hidden facts or understand complex processes.
- Journalistic independence and professional ethical values reflected in the work.
- The plurality, contrast and verification of the sources used.
- The precision and rigor in the treatment of the facts.
