Grants to Cover Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery – Brazil

Nominations open for the Sisters Anti-Trafficking Awards!

Deadline: 3-Sep-21

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking applications to Cover Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery.

Human trafficking is greater today than at any other time in history. The most recent estimates indicate that around 40 million people are subject to modern slavery, in an activity that generates illegal profits valued at more than 150 billion dollars. At Basil, around 56,000 workers were rescued from situations analogous to slavery between 1995 and 2020. And the COVID-19 pandemic hindered the fight against the problem, limiting inspection.

The course How to Cover Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery, which the Thomson Reuters Foundation will promote over the course of a week, is a unique opportunity for Brazilian journalists to acquire skills, expand their knowledge and report on the topic, under the guidance of experienced journalists from Thomson Reuters Foundation and experts in the field.

The role of the media in raising public awareness, reducing vulnerability and holding governments, legislators and businesses accountable will be discussed. Participants will review innovative approaches to coverage of trafficking and forced labor, while also reflecting on the need for integrated policy responses across borders.

In particular, the course will address the ethics of coverage of slavery – from how to interact with traumatized survivors, to overcoming the prejudices and stereotypes of journalists themselves. They will also talk about security issues, particularly in contacting sources in the coverage of organized crime.
