Nominations are open for Human Rights Press Awards to recognise top rights-related reporting from around Asia, with the goal of increasing respect for people’s basic rights and focusing attention on threats to those freedoms.
The awards, which are now in their 23rd year, are organised by The Foreign Correspondents’ Club Hong Kong, Amnesty International and the Hong Kong Journalists Association.
Categories
- Breaking News / Investigative Feature / Explanatory Feature / Commentary Writing: Works must have been published in text-based news media including, but not restricted to, newspapers, magazines, journals and wire service. For a series of work, all of which must have been published, choose the top two articles and provide a brief summary of the rest.
- Photography (Single image): They accept JPEGs with a quality setting of eight or above. They should be at least 2,500 pixels on the longest side and resize for smaller images. Entries must contain an English-language caption. If assistance is required for translation please contact the award administrators. A single image entry may also be submitted as part of a series.
- Photography (Series): Maximum eight images per entry. All photographs must cover one single, specific human rights issue.

- Short Video (English, Chinese): As originally published with duration less than five minutes. They accept MediaPlayer or Quicktime compatible files. If the work is available online, please submit a URL.
- Documentary Video (English, Chinese): As originally published with duration exceeding five minutes. They accept MediaPlayer or Quicktime compatible files. If the work is available online, please submit a URL.
- Audio (English, Chinese): Audio-based journalism using radio, podcast or other audio-based online formats, published on a professional media platform. They accept MP3 files. If the work is available online, please include a URL.
- Multimedia (English, Chinese): Makes use of two or more of the following mediums: text, photo essay, video, audio/podcast, infographic and/or interactive elements. This category is for works that do not fit easily into their other categories – so a standard article with a single photo, or a TV show with a simple transcript would not qualify. A URL is required for this category. Please note that they do not accept self-published works.
- Student Writing (English, Chinese): News articles and features published in either a student or professional publication, either online or offline, are eligible. Commentary articles, essays, personal blogs and unpublished manuscripts are not accepted. Online works must have appeared on sites linked to professional or campus media. Self-published works seen only on Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo or other social media are not accepted.
- Student Video & Audio (English, Chinese): Broadcasts need to come from either a professional or campus media channel, either online or offline. Online works must have appeared on sites linked to professional or campus media. Self-published works seen only on Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo or other social media are not accepted.
- People’s Choice Photo Award: Judges will select entries from submissions to ‘Photography (Single image)’ and ‘Photography (Series)’ award categories. Separate submissions to this category directly are not accepted.
Eligibility Criteria
- Works must be:
- In English or Chinese
- Reported by professional journalists (except student categories), including freelancers, excluding corporations or activist groups
- Published or broadcast during the past calendar year, January 1 to December 31, 2018 on a professional media platform (except students)
- Reported from the Asia region, including Central Asia, excluding Middle East, Australia, New Zealand
- Related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Each entry must cite the specific article that the work seeks to address.
- No more than three entries per journalist are accepted. In some cases, series of multiple works can constitute one entry.
- For student awards, no more than two works per entrant are accepted. Works by groups of students are accepted.
- Any work already submitted for one category cannot also be submitted into any additional category.
