The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is offering a new program for U.S.-based reporters, focused on reporting on issues that span the U.S.-Mexico border, including human rights violations, immigration, corruption and drug trafficking.
Journalists will be invited to submit investigative proposals on border issues during this program. ICFJ will provide either small reporting grants or fellowship funding (depending on reporters’ individual needs) to produce the proposed investigation. All project participants are expected to complete at least one investigative report throughout the duration of the program. ICFJ will provide editors for all projects and data visualization services (if necessary).
During this program, six U.S.-based reporters will work with ICFJ and the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers (BCJB) and participate in the following activities:
- A virtual orientation (January 7th), which will focus on techniques for investigative reporting. The orientation will also include sessions about the specific context of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Eligibility Criteria
- All journalists with interest in covering topics related to the U.S.-Mexico border are invited to apply. Both the orientation and the “Investigathon” are aimed at strengthening U.S. reporters’ understanding of the context.
- All working journalists are welcome to apply, regardless of their focus.
- ICFJ will accept applicants from any U.S. state. They are looking for candidates from a variety of backgrounds and experience.
- Both freelancers and individuals working for established media outlets are welcome to apply.
- ICFJ and BCJB will prioritize applicants with some experience working on investigative reporting, however, the program is open to all working journalists.
Proposal Review and Selection
ICFJ and BCJB review the following:
- The journalist’s background and previous experience;
- The viability of the investigative report being produced over a 3-6 month period of time;
- Collaborative elements (ICFJ and BCJB can help foster working relationships with Mexican journalists and media if the U.S. journalist has this in mind). The selection committee consists of ICFJ and BCJB staff and will likely include a hired editor as well.
