Deadline: 15-May-23
The International Journalists’ Programmes (IJP) is seeking applications for its German-Japanese scholarship program that will focus on the areas of economy, geopolitics, environment/energy and new technologies.
A total of five journalists from Germany and five from Japan will have the opportunity to take part in the two-month stay abroad.
Objective
The IJP, a non-profit association, has been offering scholarship programs for freelance and permanent journalists for over 40 years. These exchange programs make it possible to get to know a country intensively as a temporary correspondent on a bilateral basis.
With the help of this program, journalists should get a personal impression of politics, business, culture and everyday social life in the host country.
The various scholarship programs of the IJP are supported by donations, funds from the Federal Foreign Office and private sponsors.
Scholarships
- The Japan scholarship begins in mid-October with a joint introductory conference in Berlin. In advance, there will be two virtual meetings in September, which will enable the participants to get to know each other and give an insight into the respective customs of everyday work on site.
- The usually eight-week stays in the host country take place from mid-October to mid-December.
- No pandemic-related restrictions are expected at the time of the tender. If there are current changes, these will be taken into account in consultation with the participants.
- Research grants are awarded for the stay in Japan, which provide for free work in the host country. Nevertheless, a short stay at a guest medium to gain an insight into the local media landscape. A permanent contact with the Foreign Correspondents Club in Tokyo is planned.
- A final conference in Tokyo in mid-December is planned.
- Six weeks after completing the program, the participants submit their journalistic products and a five-page, illustrated report on their experiences. The texts and reports are included in a final documentation. All scholarship holders are invited to stay in touch beyond the program through the IJP’s global alumni network.
- The scholarship holders receive a one-time payment of 4,000 euros. The amount is intended to cover travel expenses, local living expenses and the costs of health insurance abroad. A personal contribution is expected. There is no provision for remuneration for on-site work.
