International Writing Program 2022 in Argentina

2023 International Writing Program Fall Residency

Deadline: 25-Mar-22

The U.S. Embassy in Argentina is currently accepting applications from rising literary stars for the International Writing Program (IWP), to take place at the University of Iowa from late August or early September to mid- or late November 2022 (specific dates to be announced at a later date).

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs collaborates annually with the University of Iowa to bring together international established and emerging creative writers to the United States to participate in the International Writing Program (IWP) in Iowa City, Iowa. IWP is one of the most renowned global forums bringing together rising literary stars, including screenwriters, multi-media platform writers and influential opinion leaders to participate in a 12-week residency program.

Candidates must be fluent in English, comfortable with cross-cultural dynamics and interested in interacting with other artists from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Except under exceptional circumstances, candidates should have published at least one volume of work or professional script credit, or authored works that have appeared in significant publications or attracted significant audiences over the last two years. Poets, fiction writers, dramatists, and screenwriters are eligible. Writers whose publications and careers are based on literary translation and creative non-fiction (e.g. journalism, cultural commentary, biography and memories) will be evaluated mainly for their work in one creative genre. Selected participants must attend the full 12-week program in the United States. No absences, late starts/early departures are permitted. Due to housing limitations and the intense nature of this program, family members are not permitted to accompany the writers during the course of the residency.

The Residency, which usually runs from late August to mid-November, is designed for established and emerging creative writers — poets, fiction writers, dramatists, and nonfiction writers. The minimum requirements are that they have published at least one book, and that they possess sufficient proficiency in English to benefit from the Iowa experience.
