The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) initiative, express yourself!, seeks to support the production of high-quality journalism with a focus on gender and sexual diversity that makes visible the problems as well as women and people part of the LGBTIQ + populations in El Salvador.
The initiative will launch the second year of the professional development program for journalists in El Salvador with scholarships for journalistic specialization in a gender and sexual diversity approach.
The program will promote the realization of journalistic projects accompanied by tutors. These projects will link international journalists specialized in these issues with journalists from the country committed to the advancement of social justice and equality. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive competitive funds to finance the realization of their reports.
The workshops will bring together feminist and LGBTIQ + networks together with journalists to foster lines of communication, understanding and greater respect for equal rights.
Topics to be discussed in the program include:
- The current media landscape and the coverage they make on the problems of women and LGBTIQ + populations
- The language to use, including appropriate definitions and terminology and good practices
- An analysis of privileges and prejudices. How to examine ourselves to ensure that these do not affect our coverage?
- Human rights from a gender perspective and the mechanisms of international law that guarantee them.
- Regional analysis: How are the rights of women and LGBTIQ + populations in other Latin American countries?
- Religion and beliefs: their influence in society. Approaches to the coverage of the rights of women and LGBTIQ + populations
- Diversity and native peoples
- Physical and digital security for coverage
Benefits
All participant costs will be paid by the IWMF, including transportation, food and lodging. The Express yourself! It will take place over a period of 9 months, starting in April, at convenient times. Most workshops and activities will take place on weekends, for the convenience of working hours.
Requirements to apply:
- Have a minimum of two years of experience in journalism.
- Share publications made in the last two years
- Send two work references
- In case of working for a medium, submit a letter of authorization to participate in the training and activities of the program signed by the medium.
- Be a native and / or resident of El Salvador. Exceptions will be reviewed by case.
