Media Training—Beyond Event-Centered Environmental Reporting in Malaysia

Chevening: Africa Media Freedom Fellowship

Deadline: 3-Mar-22

Internews in Malaysia and the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) are inviting journalists from Malaysia to apply for the Environmental Journalism Workshop, to be held in Selangor from March 16-18 2022.

This is a free training. Internews will bear the travel, accommodation, and meal costs of selected participants.

During the training, participants will expand their understanding of the cross-sectoral themes in environmental stories; learn how to identify alternative sources, underreported and potential topics as well as techniques to enhance environmental reporting, regardless of their beats.

Sessions will be carried out in a combination of classroom-style learning and hands-on exercises and interactive discussions with trainers and speakers. In addition, participants will gain new skills in using key resources and tools to enable them to improve story pitches and write impactful environmental stories. Participants will also have the chance to network and collaborate with journalists from different states.

Participants can join a field trip to an Orang Asli village in Selangor on the last day. Through a guided hike and cooking class, participants will learn more about the traditional knowledge of Indigenous communities and their relationship with nature for livelihoods and culture.
