Media Workshop on Wildlife and Conservation Reporting in East Africa

Leaders in Innovation Fellowship Programme 2020 (KENIA)

Deadline: 1 March 2020

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites journalists to apply for its second wildlife and conservation workshop to be held from March 30 to April 3 in Laikipia, Kenya.

The workshop is open to journalists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda and will focus on issues such as poaching, water management, human-wildlife conflicts and community-based conservation.

Laikipia is a vast county lying along the equator in central Kenya, where sprawling plains offer majestic views of Mt. Kenya. In addition to some of the most well-known, dynamic wildlife – such as elephants, lions and rhinos – the county is home to African wild dogs, diverse species of birds and plants and the endangered Grevy’s zebra, whose habitat is being rapidly degraded by livestock grazing.

EJN will be hosting the five-day workshop at the Mpala Research Centre to highlight conservation efforts in the region and explore some ways researchers, indigenous groups and local communities are involved.

Participants will have the opportunity to shadow scientists in their “living lab” as they track Grevy’s zebras and African wild dogs. They’ll also meet with experts to discuss various environmental challenges, including habitat loss, land degradation, invasive plant species and poaching.
