The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) and the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) are co-hosting a program that will bring together women in politics and women in the media to combat violence against women in both of these sectors.
One of the most serious barriers to inclusive democracies and institutions is violence or threats of violence, that directly impact a woman’s ability to participate in politics and in the media. Violence against women in politics and the media includes all physical and online forms of aggression, harassment, coercion, and intimidation against women simply because they are women. Acts of violence against women in politics and the media are often directed at individual women, but are more broadly intended to frighten other women who are already active in politics and the media, to deter women who might consider pursuing a career in either of this fields, and to communicate to society that women should not participate in public life in any capacity. This is a global issue that has only worsened with the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This program will include:
- A series of 3 three-day in-person workshops and bimonthly online meetings, happening over a period of eight months in 2023. The workshops will occur between January and April of 2023. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate upon completion.
- In this program, selected participants will have access to:
- Safety planning tools, online safety tools for politically active women in both sectors;
- Hostile environment and first aid training for women in media and politically active women;
- Access to and training on a variety of tools designed to assist women in advocacy aimed at political parties, legislators, media houses;
- Access to and training on designing campaigns to raise public awareness of violence against women in politics and media.
- In addition, participants will participate in bimonthly online meetings where they can come together to discuss violence against women in politics and media and develop advocacy strategies or campaigns to address the negative impact of violence against women on women’s political participation.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible for this program, you must:
- Identify as a woman or non-binary.
- Be 18 or older.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of Liberia.
- Be a politically active woman OR a woman in media – please see detailed information for each sector below.
- This program is inclusive of all who identify as women, which includes trans women and non-binary people.
