Entries are now open for the Premio 2020 Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award.
The Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award is an initiative aimed at encouraging excellence in the use of data by journalists to report, analyze and investigate issues that affect Brazilian society.
The 2020 edition of the Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award will be organized by Open Knowledge Brasil and Transparência Brasil, non-profit organizations that make up the Organizing Committee. The award has the institutional support of the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism.
Objectives
The award has the general objectives:
- Encourage the production and use of open data on topics of public interest in journalism;
- Encourage active transparency practices regarding the methodology and data sources used in journalistic works;
- Inspire students and journalists to work with data in their investigations;
- Recognize professionals and outstanding works in the field of data journalism;
Categories
The Cláudio Weber Abramo Data Journalism Award is nationwide and receives entries in four categories:
- Data-driven research
- New discoveries and new knowledge. Here, they seek high social impact jobs that apply data analysis to shed light on topics of public interest.
- Visualization
- Data can be beautiful and informative! In this category, they will judge how much visualization is able to communicate the main journalistic findings and to involve the public and its usability on various platforms.
- Innovation in data journalism
- Going further: this category is for data journalism jobs that experiment with new technologies or innovative formats.
- Open Data Open
- source journalism: here, the focus is on transparency practices, whether through the use of mechanisms such as the Access to Information Law, the structuring or availability of the databases used, methodology documentation or publication of the scripts and software involved at work, use of open licenses, etc.
Award Information
The Organizing Committee will award 1 (one) work indicated by the jury in each category with R $ 2,500.00 (two thousand and five hundred reais).
Eligibility Criteria
- Participation in the Award is open to anyone who complies with the requirements below:
- Has published journalistic work in any medium (digital, print, TV, radio) between September 9, 2019 and October 1, 2020;
- At the time of registration, have a formal employment or formal authorization from the organization that produced the content entered in the award;
- Submit your application within the period described below, in article 6;
- Do not participate in the jury or hold positions of any nature in the organizations that make up the Organizing Committee, presented in article 1 of these Regulations;
- Works produced by press offices, works with sponsored content ( branded content) financed by commercial organizations or works with direct participation of members of the jury on the team are not eligible.
Evaluation Criteria
During the evaluations, the following criteria will be observed:
- Originality : what makes the work unique, whether it is a great discovery made; a technique used; the effort or risk involved in the job; narrative quality or innovation in the way of telling the story;
- Relevance : the social importance of the topic addressed or the impact in terms of producing evidence on critical issues or changes in public policies; the plurality of sources and perspectives worked on;
- Replicability : the availability of the code, methodology, sources and processes involved in the verification in an open and accessible way whenever possible;
Accuracy : statistical accuracy and precision in data processing;
