Smart Cities in the UK: An Information Press Tour to the UK for Russian Journalists

Request for Proposals: UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme in Cambodia

Deadline: 23 September 2019

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking applications from journalists for its program entitled “Smart Cities in the UK”.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation has been inviting journalists from around the world to London and other cities in the UK for over 30 years. They are pleased to offer beginning and developing career journalists from Russia the opportunity to visit the UK in October.

In a globalized world, Russia and the UK are facing similar challenges, such as growing economic inequality, climate change, migration, and threats to international security. The proposed press tours are organized so that journalists can share professional knowledge and best practices that exist in each country.

By 2050, more than 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. Cities are centers of innovation, business and investment, culture, and being home to opportunities, they attract millions of people.

Meanwhile, urban areas are faced with increasing threats in the areas of ecology (air pollution, lack of water, waste emissions, traffic congestion), as well as in socio-economic aspects (social isolation, inequality, homelessness, congestion in social services).

Whether it is overpopulation, air pollution, social isolation or inequality, they are increasingly exposed to natural and man-made shocks. This tour will allow journalists to see developments and innovations in the UK and at the same time get acquainted with experts and industry leaders in building sustainable and liveable cities.

A rich 5-day program includes meetings with experts, interaction with other journalists and officials working in this field.

This press tour also includes hands-on workshops on strengthening journalism skills that the Thomson Reuters Foundation conducts around the world, helping participants create content that meets international media standards. At the end of the program, a Thomson Reuters Foundation certificate is issued.

Existing journalists interested in professional development are invited to participate. During and after the UK press tour, participants are expected to work on creating and publishing journalistic materials.
