South Asia Journalists Association (SAJA) is accepting nominations from journalists and news organizations for excellence in reporting on South Asia or the worldwide South Asian diaspora.
This year, they are introducing two new award categories that recognize the two biggest events of 2020 – the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Categories
- The Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting about South Asia – All media: Established in honor of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was killed while reporting in Pakistan, this award recognizes outstanding explanatory or investigative reporting that exhibits the kind of courage and integrity that Pearl embodied in his work. The reporting can be a single article or a series on a specific topic.
- Outstanding business story about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asian diaspora: All media This award recognizes outstanding news, feature or explanatory reporting in business, technology and economics
- Outstanding arts, culture, and lifestyle reporting about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asian diaspora: All media This award recognizes outstanding reporting about arts, culture or lifestyle.
- Outstanding piece of non-fiction writing about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asians diaspora: All media This award recognizes outstanding creative writing, use of language, quality of articulation and coherence that covers news, sports, business, entertainment or any other aspect relating to South Asia or South Asians.
- Outstanding photography about South Asia, or the worldwide South Asian diaspora: This award recognizes outstanding feature or breaking news photography in black and white or color in newspapers, magazines or digital publications that DO NOT include personal blogs.
- Outstanding reporting on COVID-19 pandemic relating to South Asia, or the worldwide South Asian diaspora: All Media This award recognizes outstanding reporting on the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. All stories published between January 1 – July 15, 2020 are eligible for this award.
- Outstanding story on any subject: All media This award recognizes outstanding reporting on any subject and in any medium by a journalist of South Asian origin.
- Outstanding story on race & diversity following the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement: All media This award recognizes reporting on the BLM movement, race relations, and the push to support diversity in 2020, as well as the fallout and impact of these movements. All stories published between May 25-July 15, 2020 are eligible for this award.
- Outstanding story on any subject by a South Asian student in the US or Canada: All media This award recognizes outstanding reporting on any subject by a South Asian student studying in North America. Reporting can be in any field or medium.
Eligibility Criteria
- Appeared in a US or Canadian news outlet between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, unless stated otherwise in specific categories. Work published in a South Asian publication is NOT eligible for entry.
- Covered or focused on subjects about one or more than one South Asian countries or the South Asian worldwide diaspora.
- Been produced by journalists based anywhere in the world, but work published in a U.S. or Canadian
Criteria
- Awards are open to all US and Canadian media: national newspapers/TV channels, local/regional newspapers/TV channels, news and features websites, and other online platforms that DO NOT include personal or professional blogs.
- Freelancers and journalists employed by newsrooms are both eligible to apply by submitting a story published in a North American publication.
- Individuals may submit entries or organizations may enter the contest on behalf of their journalists.
- Multiple entries may be made. However, the same entry/story cannot be submitted in different categories.
- All media outlets must be based in North America. South Asian subsidiaries of North American companies will not be eligible, unless the same story has also been published in their North American outlet.
- Former SAJA board members are eligible to apply but they must not have served on the board since the past two years (2018)
