Thomson Reuters Foundation accepting Applications for Covering Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery in Brazil

Grants to Support the Activities of NGOs in Fight Against Human Trafficking in BiH

Deadline: 1 May 2019

Thomson Reuters Foundation is accepting applications for its program entitled “Covering Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery”.

The Course on How to Cover Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery, which the Thomson Reuters Foundation promotes over a week in São Paulo, is a unique opportunity for Brazilian journalists to acquire skills, expand their knowledge and report on the subject under the guidance of experienced journalists from the Thomson Reuters Foundation and experts in the field.

With the support of the C & A Foundation, the course combines the knowledge of experts and practical activities, focusing on the production of high impact and wide dissemination reports.

In addition to a deeper understanding of the scale, nature and causes of the problem, journalists will be aware of what is or is being done in terms of global standards to combat modern slavery, including key conventions, other international instruments and a new protocol, with legal obligation, which obliges countries to take action.

The role of the media in public awareness, vulnerability reduction, and accountability of governments, legislators, and businesses will be discussed. Participants will look at innovative approaches to combating trafficking and forced labor and coverage of migration, also reflecting the need for integrated policy responses across borders.

The course will address, in particular, the ethics of coverage of slavery – how to interact with traumatized survivors, overcoming prejudices and stereotypes of journalists themselves. They will also talk about security issues, in particular the contact with sources in the coverage of organized crime.

Funding

The Thomson Reuters Foundation will cover travel and accommodation costs for journalists outside of São Paulo.
