Virtual Training for Journalists Reporting on Business and Climate Change

Applications open for Seeds of Sustainability Fund Program 2025

Deadline: 01-Aug-2025

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is organizing a virtual media workshop in late August to early September for business and finance journalists in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. This initiative aims to strengthen climate-focused reporting on environmental accountability and highlight financial and industrial solutions across Asia’s business sector.

Under the Business and Climate Media Initiative (BCMI), the four-day workshop will explore how businesses in Asia contribute to climate change, while also focusing on their role in adapting to and mitigating the crisis. It seeks to deepen journalists’ understanding of sustainable practices and climate action within the private sector.

The workshop will provide insights from experts including researchers, policymakers, local community members, and business representatives. Topics will include innovation, technology, and climate finance, with a focus on inclusive strategies to reduce emissions and support decarbonization in the four participating countries.

Journalists will learn how to report with accountability and solutions-based approaches, improve storytelling techniques, and enhance audience engagement. They will also get opportunities to develop story ideas, share resources, and network with peers. The final workshop agenda will be shared in early August with selected participants.

Those attending the workshop will gain knowledge on various issues, such as how businesses’ carbon-heavy practices contribute to climate change, and the importance of transparency in the private sector. Discussions will also cover the economic impacts of climate change, ESG frameworks, Net Zero targets, corporate greenwashing, and the just transition.

Participants will explore pathways toward a green, fair, and inclusive economy. This includes understanding policy support for blended finance, innovative technologies, and accessing domestic and international funds for mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage efforts.

Applicants must be from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, or Thailand. They must have a working knowledge of English, Thai, or Indonesian. Applications in any other language will not be accepted. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided to support multilingual participation.

The workshop is open to journalists across all mediums—online, print, television, and radio—as well as other media professionals with experience in business, finance, or economic reporting. Prior experience in climate or energy journalism is a plus but not necessary. Freelancers and staff reporters from all media types are welcome to apply.

EJN especially encourages applications from women, Indigenous communities, rural journalists, and early to mid-career professionals. Applicants must disclose any use of generative AI tools in their submissions, and unethical behavior—including submitting AI-generated content as original—may lead to disqualification.

Around 40 to 50 participants will be selected, with attention to fair representation from each country. Selected applicants will be notified by the end of July. The workshop will be conducted over Zoom across four days, with three-hour sessions each day, likely scheduled in the late afternoon or early evening.

To support accessibility, a limited number of communication stipends will be offered to participants in remote areas facing unstable internet connectivity. Interested applicants should indicate this need in their application. All participants who attend the full workshop will receive a certificate of completion from EJN.
