Apply Now: Artist in Residence Program (Canada)

IIE Artist Protection Fund – Apply Now!

Deadline: 03-Nov-2025

Applicants are now invited to submit applications for the Artist in Residence Program to support individual artists for participating in residencies and New Brunswick organizations to host professional artists, and enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work.

The Artist in Residence programs are designed to provide New Brunswick professional artists with opportunities to participate in residencies in New Brunswick or elsewhere, facilitate creation, creative research, and/or networking opportunities, as well as encouraging artists’ contact with the clientele of the host institution or organization.

An artist residency offers artists a space and time outside of their regular environment to create or develop new or in-progress work, engage in mentorship or gain new skills, broaden the network and audience for their professional artistic practice, and/or community engagement. Artists may apply for residencies either at an organization based in New Brunswick, in another location, or at an organization based in Québec through an agreement between the New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).

Successful applicants may receive up to $10,000 in funding. Artists may submit only one application per deadline and are eligible for only one grant from the Artist in Residence – Artists program per fiscal year between April 1 and March 31. Applicants with previous grants must have submitted final reports for those projects before applying again.

Eligibility requires that applicants be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have an application for permanent residency in process, with at least 12 months of residency in New Brunswick prior to the deadline. Applicants must qualify as professional artists as per artsnb’s definition and have all relevant final reports submitted. Organizations wishing to host artists are directed to a separate guideline for host organizations.

Projects are eligible if the applicant has been accepted as an artist in residence by a host organization for a residency of up to 12 months, including both on-site and virtual residencies. Collaborative projects must include specific supporting documents, and larger projects may be broken into distinct phases if there is no overlap in expenses. The recognized artistic disciplines include architecture, craft, dance, literary arts, media arts, multidisciplinary arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. Ineligible projects include those tied to regular teaching duties, academic credit, employment-related activities, non-professional contexts, or corporate and industrial purposes.

Eligible expenses covered by the grant include artist fees, materials, services, space and equipment rentals, professional services, recording and production costs, commissions, rights purchases, as well as travel, transportation, and accommodation directly tied to the residency. Capital expenses such as equipment purchases and host organization administrative costs are not eligible.

Applicants must submit a complete application by the deadline. Required materials include a project description of no more than 350 words, a balanced project budget, an artist CV, work samples, and an official letter of invitation from the hosting organization. If applicable, CVs and letters of agreement for artistic collaborators must also be provided. Optional materials include additional budget details, critical reviews, press clippings, awards, and up to two letters of recommendation. Once submitted, applications cannot be edited.

Assessment of applications is based on three weighted criteria: artistic merit at 50 percent, project feasibility at 40 percent, and application quality at 10 percent. Application closes on 3 November 2025.
