Artist in Residence Munich – the Residency Programs

Culture Connects Small Grants Programme in Vietnam and UK

Deadline: 18-Aug-2025

The Artist in Residence Munich program, in collaboration with Lothringer 13 Halle and the Goethe-Institut, is offering three research and working residencies for professional artists across various disciplines, including visual arts, music, literature, film, and dance/performance.

Selected artists will independently develop a project that conceptually addresses the theme “Antifascist Cultures of the Present.” This residency is part of a joint project by Lothringer 13 Halle and the Goethe-Institut, focusing on contemporary antifascist practices.

Each selected artist will receive a monthly stipend of €1,300 for three months, totaling €3,900. Additionally, each artist will be granted €1,000 for material and production costs for a public event at Ebenböckhaus. Free accommodation will be provided at Ebenböckhaus. Travel costs within Europe up to €350 will be reimbursed by the Goethe-Institut Athen, and further production costs of up to €1,500 per project are available upon agreement with Lothringer 13 Halle.

To be eligible, applicants must be professional, full-time artists residing in one of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, or Ukraine. Prior residency at Villa Waldberta or Ebenböckhaus disqualifies an applicant. Good knowledge of English and/or German is required. Only individual applications are accepted.

The residency cannot be postponed, shortened, or split. Partners, children, or other family members cannot be accommodated. The Ebenböckhaus is not barrier-free, and applicants must meet all contractual obligations of the City of Munich, including signing a separate grant agreement.

Initial pre-selection will be carried out by Goethe-Institutes in the eligible countries. A jury including representatives from Artist-in-Residence Munich, Lothringer 13 Halle, Goethe-Institut Athen, and regional cultural experts will make the final decisions. Up to 10 applicants will be invited for online interviews by September 25, 2025, and final selections will be announced by October 5, 2025.

Applicants must submit all materials in English through the Goethe-Institut’s online portal. Documents should be compiled into a single PDF titled “LastName_FirstName.pdf” not exceeding 10MB. Required documents include a motivational letter with a project idea (max. 2 text pages + 4 pages visual material), a CV (max. 2 pages), and an artistic portfolio (max. 20 pages). Incomplete applications or those not meeting the criteria will not be considered.
