Residency Open Call for Artists based in Indonesia

Deadline: 06-Oct-2025

Applicants are now invited to submit applications for its Residency Artists Programme to support professional development, cultural exchange, and artistic experimentation.

The eleven-week, fully funded residency for an early-career artist based in Indonesia will take place at Gasworks in London from 7 April to 23 June 2026.

All residencies are self-led, non-prescriptive and process-based; they are about enabling artists to research and develop new work, engage with the city, and build their networks. They provide administrative, pastoral, and curatorial support throughout the residency, but they expect residents to be self-motivated, and to lead on the research and production of their own work, during their time with them.

The selected artist will receive full access to a private studio at Gasworks, accommodation in their Residency House, economy return flights with transfers, visa costs and application support, a weekly stipend of £175, a materials budget of up to £800, and a prepaid travel card valid within central London. The residency also includes studio visits, an Open Studio event, networking opportunities, access to basic tools and AV equipment, a dedicated residency page with a video interview, and administrative, pastoral, and curatorial support during office hours.

Eligibility is limited to early-career contemporary visual artists based in Indonesia who have at least a moderate level of spoken English and feel comfortable discussing their work in English. The selection will be based on applications reviewed by a panel including representatives from Gasworks and external advisors with knowledge of the contemporary art scenes in Indonesia and the UK. Priority will be given to artists producing high quality work who have not had the opportunity to work in London before. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview before the final decision is made.

Gasworks encourages applications from eligible artists of all backgrounds. Their building is fully accessible, and accessible accommodation can be arranged if required. Due to limited facilities, they are unable to accept applications from artistic duos or collectives, or accommodate partners or children, though artists may still apply if they can arrange their own travel and accommodation separately. They remain open to discussing how their residency programme can be adapted to meet artists’ needs.

Applications are accepted in digital format only through the online application form available on Gasworks’ website. Applicants must submit a single PDF file including a cover sheet with personal details, a 250-word statement describing artistic practice, a 250-word statement outlining plans for the residency, up to 15 images or clips of recent work with captions, a CV or resume not exceeding three pages, and any relevant documentation such as press articles, exhibitions, or publications. Submissions must not exceed 15MB. Applicants may also choose to provide spoken rather than written answers for the practice and residency statements. The application deadline is 6 October 2025, 1pm (UK time).
