UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) is currently seeking proposals to the first call of the Strategic Priorities Fund UK Climate Resilience programme.
The programme will be jointly delivered by NERC, the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) on behalf of UKRI, and the Met Office on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
This first call aims to bring together the UK climate resilience community and/or address key knowledge gaps.
Objectives
The overarching objectives of the UK Climate Resilience programme seek to drive innovative multi- and inter-disciplinary research within the UKRI and Met Office communities to address the knowledge gaps identified above. The central objectives of the programme are:
- The robust characterisation, quantification and communication of climate-related risks
- Develop risk-informed resilience and optimise the opportunities from a transition to a low carbon future.
- Co-produce pilot end-to-end climate services
Funding Information
Up to £3·5 million is available in this first round of funding. Recognising the potential range of activities to be supported in addressing the key research criteria, research proposals are sought at two levels and anticipate funding:
- 8-12 projects up to £250,000 (at 80% full economic cost (FEC))
- 15-20 projects up to £50,000 (at 80% FEC)
Activities
The type of activities that are expected to be supported include:
- Scoping / feasibility studies
- Networking / community building activities to work across the disciplines
- Focussed research activities
Criteria
- Projects should align to at least one of objectives 1 and 2 of the programme, and are strongly encouraged to include user co-production from the outset.
- Projects must be seeking to:
- build a multi and inter-disciplinary UK climate resilience community, and/or
- address key gaps in UK climate resilience research.
- Proposals that work across the relevant disciplines are encouraged, but it is accepted not all gaps in UK climate resilience research require multiple disciplines and that there will be different geometries in the groups brought together. Funded proposals will work with the UK Climate Resilience Champion.
- To be eligible for this call, Principal Investigators must either currently hold UKRI funding (as PI or Co-I) for research related to climate resilience, or have held similar funding that ended in the past two years (i.e. with a project end date after 31 October 2016). Applicants should provide an overview of how their previously funded work relates to climate resilience and how their proposed work fits the objectives of this call in their Case for Support document.
