The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish has issued a request for applications to support research for development in Feed the Future target and aligned countries in West Africa, East Africa, and Asia.
Feed the Future (FTF) is the U.S. Government’s (USG) global hunger and food security initiative. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the FTF Innovation Lab for Fish (Fish Innovation Lab or FIL) has the overarching goal of alleviating poverty and improving nutrition through the reliable provision of fish as an animal protein source.
The aquaculture and fisheries sectors are important to global food security because:
- Fish provide high-quality animal protein and micronutrients, including vitamins A, B12, zinc, iron, and selenium. In many of the FTF countries, fish are the primary source of animal protein; thus, increased consumption of fish and/or fish products has potential to reduce childhood stunting and improve brain development and function.
- Fish are one of the most widely traded agricultural commodities worldwide; thus, increased trade (local and regional) has potential to improve livelihoods and increase incomes.
- Aquaculture and fisheries provide formal and informal employment opportunities for women and youth.
- Aquaculture enables diversification of farming systems through opportunities such as integrated aquaculture, providing increased economic resilience for producers.
Areas of Inquiry (AI)
- AI-1: Advancing the Productivity Frontier: Research under this AI will result in technologies and practices that advance the productivity frontier to drive income growth, improve diets, and promote natural resource conservation.
- AI-2: Reducing and Mitigating Risk to Fish Production Systems: Research under this AI will result in technologies and practices that reduce, manage, and mitigate risk to support resilient, prosperous, wellnourished individuals, households, and communities.
- AI-3: Improving Human Outcomes: Research in this AI will improve knowledge of how to achieve human outcomes by generating evidence on how to sustainably and equitably improve economic opportunity, nutrition, and resilience.
Cross-cutting Themes
Successful proposals also will integrate four crosscutting themes: gender mainstreaming and youth engagement, improving human nutrition, resilience of fish value chains and households, and capacity building.
Funding Information
The lab intends to fund approximately 10 proposals for up to three years and with budgets $200,000-$800,000 USD; the expected average size will be $500,000 USD.
Eligibility Criteria
This competition is open to any qualified research, educational, governmental, private sector, or nonprofit institution globally that has a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) and is registered in the System for Award Management. DUNS and SAM registration are not required for concept note submission.
