The Department for International Development (DFID), in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is currently accepting applications for its second cohort of Humanitarian Education Accelerator program. This program will help in understanding how to transform good pilot projects into scalable educational initiatives.
The program aims to identify effective methods to scale educational programs to expand quality educational access to refugees and displaced communities worldwide, by developing a cohort of successful humanitarian innovators.
Applications for support under the Humanitarian Education Accelerator (HEA) should focus on education in emergencies projects that demonstrate innovation, effectiveness, and scalability. A project is innovative if it provides a new approach to address existing problems in education in emergencies. A project is effective if it provides evidence of a proof of concept that can be linked, through a credible theory of change, to improve education outcomes for children and youth. A project is scalable if it is relevant and pertinent to the context, financially and institutionally sustainable, and adaptable.
Objectives
The Humanitarian Education Accelerator aims to improve education in crises in two ways:
- Help existing education in emergencies projects improve how they measure, evaluate, and scale their impact.
- Enlist expertise from external evaluators to build a robust evidence base on which approaches are most effective in this area, and which factors enable effective scale.
Program Components
The Humanitarian Education Accelerator is based on four components:
- Identifying Cohort of Innovation Teams
- Cohort Development and Training
- Process Evaluation Funds
- Impact Evaluation

Selected candidates will benefit from:
- Tailored mentorship on the scaling process and on evaluation;
- Annual bootcamps to build organizational capacity and enable peer-support;
- A fully-funded external evaluation and;
- Up to £300’000 to strengthen evaluation capacity within your organisation.

Education innovators from all over the world are eligible to apply.
