Applications open for Getty Scholars Program 2025

Call for Proposals: Training for Oman - MENA Scholarship Programme (Netherlands)

Deadline: 01-Oct-2025

The Getty Scholars Program supports innovative research on art and its histories, broadly defined. It brings together international scholars to collaborate across disciplines and practices while expanding the reach of their work to wider audiences.

During the residency, scholars become part of a vibrant intellectual community hosted at the Getty Center or Getty Villa, where they engage with extensive collections and resources dedicated to the preservation, study, and sharing of art and cultural heritage.

The program encourages collaborative research and welcomes proposals from teams, though each team member must apply individually and meet the eligibility requirements.

Each year, a cohort is selected that includes senior scholars and junior fellows, with research projects centered around an annual theme. For the upcoming cycle, the theme is “Provenance.” Scholars are invited to explore the ownership, movement, and transfer of art across time and place, examining its relevance to source communities, museums, historians, and the art market.

There are three main categories of grants. Scholar Grants are for established researchers and professionals with PhDs earned before September 1, 2022, or equivalent experience. Postdoctoral Fellowships are for those who received their PhDs after that date, and Predoctoral Fellowships are for current PhD candidates.

Eligible projects include those focused on art history, archaeology, and conservation. Priority is given to proposals that align with Getty’s mission and would benefit from direct engagement with its collections, library, and staff. Many grants support special initiatives tied to specific themes or regions.

Applicants are evaluated competitively based on the quality of their proposal, relevance to the annual theme, potential contribution to their field, previous accomplishments, and qualifications to complete the project. Past Getty grant recipients may reapply after a six-year waiting period.
