The Wales Co-operative Centre is currently seeking nominations for the 2021 Social Business Wales Awards to the social entrepreneurs, the business leaders, the hardworking co-operators and talented innovators of the social business sector in Wales.
Categories
- Social Enterprise of the Year: Open to social enterprises which have been trading for more than two years, in any business sector. Criteria include:
- Excellent vision and strategic direction
- Clear leadership and management of the organisation
- A high degree of customer satisfaction
- A clearly evidenced social, environmental and community impact
- Show sustainability in terms of profit and growth, or resilience in response to Covid trading conditions
- Wales One to Watch: Open to social enterprises which have been trading for less than two years, in any business sector. Criteria include:
- A clear vision for the social enterprise
- A creative approach to problem-solving
- Excellence in impact, design or resilience since inception
- Potential for future success and growth, in the judges’ view
- Tech for Good: Technology in Social Enterprise- This is open to social enterprises that have been operating for more than 2 years that use technology in either of the following ways and meets the criteria below:
- Use of new technology to develop new products or services, or
- Use of new technology in core business model to enhance service delivery
- Community Impact
- This is open to social enterprises that have been operating for more than years and are:
- locally rooted
- trading for the benefit of the local community
- accountable to the local community
- making community impact
- Criteria include:
- Excellent vision and strategic direction
- Clear leadership and management of the organisation
- Transformative impact on a place and community
- This is open to social enterprises that have been operating for more than years and are:
- Social Enterprise Team of the Year: This category acknowledges those teams which, over the course of an extremely challenging year, have demonstrated the strength, passion and resilience which is so characteristic of the social enterprise sector. Organisations should be able to evidence how these employees, working together, have gone above and beyond their role, leading to enhanced quality of products or services, greater social impact and/ or overall business growth. Criteria include:
- Demonstrate how team has demonstrated social enterprise values
- Evidence how the work of the team has lead to enhanced quality of products or services, greater social impact and/or overall business resilience
- Excellent team work
- ‘Buy Social’ – Market Builder: This award is open to any social enterprise, third sector organisation, public sector body or private sector organisation that has demonstrably made efforts within its own organisation and remit to create more opportunities to buy from social enterprises. This could be a local authority implementing a council-wide social value strategy, a company changing its procurement processes, or a social enterprise seeking to support the movement through buying social.
Award Information
Winners will receive £1000 prize money, a professional photo-shoot of their organisation, media coverage, and one year’s free membership of the Wales Co-operative Centre.
Eligibility Criteria
- For categories 1-5, your organisation must be a business head-quartered in Wales that defines itself as a social enterprise using the following criteria:

- The business has a clear social or environmental mission that is set out in its governing documents.
- It is an independent business and typically earns more than half of its income through trading (they recognise that trading conditions in 2020/2021 have been disrupted and that there may be a higher than usual proportion of income through grants and loans this year).
- It is controlled or owned in the interests of the social mission.
- It invests or gives away at least half its profits or surpluses towards its social purpose.
- It is transparent about how it operates and the impact it has.
- Category 6 (Buy Social) is also open to organisations head-quartered in Wales operating in the third, public or private sector.
