Deadline: 2-Oct-20
The Imagine MKE is inviting artists for its Road of Democracy Program to create a short-term project that responds to: What does democracy mean to you? How is our city contributing to the road of democracy this election season? How might your project continue this momentum?
The Road of Democracy project is a continuation of the conversation started by the work of MKE Downtown, Dasha Kelly Hamilton, and Della Wells.
Imagine MKE is particularly interested in project proposals that include a tangible call for action as a component of the work (ie. voter registration, voter commitments, etc.) and/or engage with an audience or community in a public space (virtual or safe physical).
This project is made possible with support from Arts Wisconsin and funding from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. Arts Wisconsin’s “We’re All In” Creative Workforce Program is a workforce engagement and development program to put Wisconsin’s creative workers back to work during the pandemic.
Milwaukee is one of up to ten communities to undertake cultural and creative projects that advance their communities and highlight civic pride, creativity, safety, connections, and community spirit.
Benefits
- Four artists will be selected to receive a fee of $1500 each to design and implement an artistic project that responds to this theme.
- The $1500 fee will be remitted in two installments to the artist. The first payment will occur by check in the first week of October, the second in the last week of October.
Project Details
- Imagine MKE is able to consider requests for additional technical support from their staff team – i.e. live streaming capabilities for projects that rely on a live performance element.
- Projects will be highlighted by Imagine MKE via digital media and press engagement, and artists will be expected to provide regular updates on the progress of the project.
- Projects must be completed by Election Day. Imagine MKE is interested in projects ranging in length and timeline.
Eligibility Criteria
- Artist practitioners of all mediums – visual, music, dance, theater, spoken word, performance, etc. – are encouraged to apply.
- Artists must live in Milwaukee County. All artists are encouraged to apply.
- The review panel will prioritize the selection of artists that are:

Context
- These four small, short-term commissions are part of a month-long initiative by Imagine MKE to continue the conversation about where we are on the Road of Democracy that was started by the work of MKE Downtown, Della Wells, and Dasha Kelly.
- Imagine MKE will be producing a series of panel discussions, highlighting the ongoing work of the four artists selected and engaging in partnerships with civic engagement focused nonprofits throughout the month of October.
