Deadline: 27-Jul-2025

The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is a unique global program that arranges, funds, and supports fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide. These fellowships provide a safe space for scholars to continue their academic work.

IIE-SRF fellows are often eligible to apply for a second and final year of fellowship support. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with fellowships awarded quarterly. Each fellowship lasts one year and provides USD $25,000 to support temporary academic positions where scholars can work safely.

Applicants include professors, researchers, and public intellectuals who face threats that prevent them from continuing their work in their home countries. Scholars from any country and in any academic discipline may qualify. Selection is based on academic qualifications, experience, the quality and potential of their work, and the urgency of the threats they face.

Preference is given to scholars who hold a Ph.D. or highest degree in their field, have significant teaching or research experience, an established record of published research, and demonstrate strong academic accomplishment or promise. Priority is also given to those facing immediate, targeted threats to their lives or careers and who will benefit both their home and host academic communities.

IIE-SRF generally cannot accept applications from individuals seeking to continue their studies, those displaced for over two years, those holding citizenship or permanent residency in a safe country, or those who have already completed two years on a similar fellowship for threatened scholars.

For Ukrainian applicants, IIE-SRF closely monitors the ongoing crisis and must make difficult decisions on resource allocation due to high demand.

Applications require an application form, a current CV or resume detailing academic degrees, current and previous academic positions, a comprehensive list of publications, and other relevant academic work such as supervision of theses, conference presentations, grants, and awards. Applicants must also provide a copy of their Ph.D. or highest degree and samples of recent research publications.
