Deadline: 22-Feb-21
Are you experienced in providing education for young people? Are you constantly looking for workshop formats that enable everyone to be seen and to participate? Are you interested in topics related to “democracy and digitalization? Then become one of the fellows for 2021!
In cooperation with Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft and as part of the Educational Network Understanding Europe, the Schwarzkopf Foundation awards four fellowships to young European educators in 2021.
The fellowships aim to develop new workshops focusing on democratic citizenship education in the digital public sphere. These new workshops and their didactic approaches are targeted at students 13-years and older and should therefore be diversity-oriented, low-threshold and open towards the interests and lives of young people.
Introducing these new formats in classrooms, they aim to strengthen the democratic competencies of students and young adults in the digital age by creating a space for them to reflect and discuss topics such as democratic participation in digital spaces, representation of marginalized groups through digitalization, and the role of social media and social movements in a digital Europe. For the fellows, the programme offers a distinct opportunity to professionalize their social commitment and passion for low-threshold and diversity-oriented educational work.
What is expected of Fellows?
- During the founding period, the fellows are expected to develop individual, diversity-oriented democratic citizenship education workshops – between 45 and 90 minutes long and in the language of their country.
- A two-day creative and design seminar at the end of March will kick-off the first phase of the fellowship and provide the fellows with all necessary information about the project.
- Between April and June, the fellows will then advance their ideas and test their workshops in different learning settings and school types in their countries.
- During this second phase, they will be supported by monthly consultations with the project partners and individual consultations with experts on related topics.
- In July and August, the fellows participate in a reflection seminar where they have the opportunity to discuss and talk about their individual formats with the other fellows and prepare their material for testing.
- In September, they will take part in the European Summer School and present their workshop formats to our Peer Educators and network.
- The fellowship concludes with the publication of workshop materials in October and a final digital event in November.
Benefits
- The duration of the fellowship is six months, from April to September 2021. During that period, the fellows receive financial support of 450 Euro per month as well as pedagogical support by the Schwarzkopf Foundation and Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft.
- On top, fellows are advised by experts on inclusion and diversity as well as by media producers (e.g. journalists, video, and audio producers). They become part of the Understanding Europe Network which is active in various European countries and get to present their workshop ideas at the European Summer School.
- In addition, fellows will gain hands-on experience in educational practice by testing their formats in different learning settings, e.g. secondary schools or vocational schools. At the end of the fellowship, the results are meant to be published as Open Educational Resources.
Eligibility Criteria
- The fellowship is primarily aimed at young Europeans between the ages of 18 and 27 who already have practical experience in diversity-oriented educational work – preferably in the field of peer education.
- They should be willing to use and reflect their knowledge of representation and participation, diversity, power structures, anti-discrimination, anti-racism, anti-Semitism, and empowerment.
- Hands-on experience in the usage of audio-visual media would be an asset but not a must.
- Multilingualism is a plus.
