Applicants are invited to submit their applications for Churchill Fellowship, a once in a lifetime opportunity to create change in your community or professional sector, by discovering new approaches and best practice in other countries and using those insights to create change across the UK.
The Churchill Fellowship funds you to spend up to two months learning from the world, either by travelling overseas or online from the UK, and then the Churchill Fellowship helps you to turn your ideas into action in the UK.
Churchill Fellowships are based on learning from the world, discovering new ideas and best practice from leading practitioners worldwide. Findings from this global research are used by Fellows to develop new solutions for today’s key challenges.

What they fund?
The Churchill Fellowship offers Fellowships within its grants framework of universal and annual themes, which cover every aspect of society.
A successful application must show us:
- An idea that can make a practical and worthwhile contribution to UK society, in any field whatsoever.
- A reason why the idea should be researched overseas, anywhere in the world.
- An applicant with the potential to make change happen, whoever they are and whatever their background.
You will need to demonstrate all of these aspects:
- An idea that aims to solve a clearly stated need or issue in UK society, whether professionally, locally or nationally.
- An idea for which there are new approaches and solutions in projects you can research overseas.
- An idea that is not already being implemented in the UK.
- A clear sense of where and why the idea could be researched abroad.
- A clear sense of how the idea could be translated into practical action by the applicant in the UK.
Benefits
The grant covers your research-related expenses:
- Travel research option: economy class return travel to your destination countries, internal travel in your destination countries, food and accommodation for the duration of your travels.
- Online research option: self-contained accommodation and living expenses for the duration of your research.
Some costs for interpreters, visas, vaccinations, personal assistants/carers and conference attendances may also be covered, on a case-by-case basis.
Eligible Projects
The Churchill Fellowship funds a wide range of projects which are proposed by applicants themselves. The Churchill Fellowship invites applications across ten or more award themes, which are updated each year according to the challenges currently facing the UK. The Churchill Fellowship also has an Open theme for projects that do not fit into any other theme. Eligibility Criteria
Fellowships are open to all UK citizens, regardless of qualifications, background or age. Fellows come from all parts of UK society. The Churchill Fellowship does not require qualifications, but you should be passionate about what you do and keen to share your passion to inspire others.
To apply, you must satisfy all of these criteria:
- A UK Citizen in possession of a UK passport at the time when you apply.
- Resident in the UK.
- Aged 18 or over when you submit your application form (or turn 18 by the end of that year).
Two important criteria for Churchill Fellowships are:
- They must require research into information that can only be found in other countries, whether this is found by travelling there or by online research from the UK; and
- They must provide a public benefit in the UK, whether to a particular community or sector or to the UK as a whole. The Churchill Fellowship does not fund projects which only benefit the individual and show no potential for wider benefit.
