Request for Proposals: Alzheimer’s Disease Research Grant

Submissions open for Matla Grants Program 2025

Deadline: 29-Sep-2025

The Alzheimer’s Disease Research program, led by the BrightFocus Foundation, funds groundbreaking research to advance the understanding, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The program is open to both U.S. and international researchers who are pursuing innovative scientific investigations in this field.

The foundation actively supports scientists from diverse backgrounds and encourages applications from individuals underrepresented in Alzheimer’s research. This effort is aimed at promoting creativity and inclusive approaches to solving complex scientific problems.

There are two categories of awards offered: Standard Awards and Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards. Standard Awards are intended for new and early-career investigators who have earned their MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, or completed their formal training within the past 12 years. Applicants must serve as the principal investigator, have their own lab space, and hold institutional permission to manage the project and supervise team members.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards are designed for researchers in the final stages of their mentored training. These grants support projects carried out in established laboratories and are meant to help young scientists transition into independent research careers.

Standard Awards provide up to $100,000 per year for a maximum of three years, totaling $300,000. Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards offer $100,000 per year for up to two years, with a total value of $200,000.

For Standard Awards, applicants must hold a qualifying degree and be within 12 years of receiving it. While part of the grant can support the principal investigator’s salary, it must be no more than 35% of either the individual’s salary or the total yearly grant amount. Co-investigator salaries are capped at 25%. Eligible institutions include non-profits, academic, government, or for-profit research institutions, including startups and biotech firms.

For the Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards, candidates must hold a relevant degree and be within five years of its conferral or the end of their residency. Additional eligibility time may be granted for specific situations, such as maternity leave. Applicants may apply before officially completing their degree, provided they have a confirmed placement in a host lab and are the lead author of the proposal.

Applications must be submitted through the provided portal and follow strict formatting rules. Submissions must be in English, use black font at no smaller than 11 points, and include margins of at least 3/4 inch on all sides. All content should be clear and free of jargon or unusual abbreviations. Word, character, and page limits for different sections must be strictly followed.
