RFAs: Clinical Studies on Ketones and Continuous Ketone Monitoring in Type 1 Diabetes

JDRF Open Call: Glycaemic and beta cell monitoring in individuals at risk of type 1 diabetes

Deadline: 12-Nov-2025

The Breakthrough T1D has launched a new funding opportunity focused on advancing research into circulating ketones and the use of continuous ketone monitoring (CKM) in type 1 diabetes (T1D).

While most existing knowledge on ketones in T1D comes from single point-of-care blood and urine measurements, these traditional approaches provide only limited snapshots in time. They fail to capture the dynamic nature of ketone fluctuations, leaving significant gaps in understanding ketone metabolism, the prevention of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and other long-term complications.

With the advent of continuous ketone monitors, researchers now have a powerful tool to explore ketone dynamics with greater depth and precision. This call invites letters of intent for studies that address clinically relevant questions around ketones, leveraging CKM to generate new insights into T1D pathophysiology, risk management, and treatment strategies. The ultimate aim is to build evidence that can transform patient care, improve safety, and enhance outcomes for people living with T1D.

Applicants may request up to $1,500,000 over a maximum of three years for their studies. Breakthrough T1D is also open to considering larger, more complex projects where a strong justification is provided, though smaller-scale studies are equally encouraged. Funding decisions will assess the appropriateness of the budget in relation to the scope of work and the availability of additional resources to ensure successful completion.

This opportunity is open to domestic and international non-profit and public or private organizations, including universities, hospitals, laboratories, and government units. Eligible applicants must hold advanced degrees such as M.D., D.O., D.M.D., D.V.M., or Ph.D., with faculty or equivalent positions at recognized institutions. For-profit organizations may also participate, either independently or in collaboration with academia, though additional requirements will apply at later stages.

There are no citizenship restrictions for this program. To promote excellence and diversity, Breakthrough T1D strongly encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, and members of underrepresented minority groups. By investing in research on ketones and CKM, this initiative aims to drive a deeper understanding of T1D and unlock new approaches to improving the lives of those affected by the condition.
