RFAs: Grants for addressing Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Human-Animal Interaction

Open Call for Proposals for Farm Safety, Health and Wellbeing Projects (Ireland)

Deadline: 26-Feb-2026

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) is currently inviting research grant proposals that explore the health benefits of human-animal interactions and pet ownership.

The key focus areas of this opportunity include child health and development, healthy aging, mental health & wellness, and physical health outcomes. The funding also emphasizes research on animal-assisted interventions (AAI) that study the health outcomes of pet ownership.

The program generally supports five to six projects each year, with project costs averaging approximately $50,000 per project and an average duration of about 20 months. While there is no strict maximum budget for a HABRI grant proposal, these figures reflect typical funding and project timelines.

HABRI encourages institutions and organizations from around the world to submit proposals supported by strong theoretical frameworks and innovative methodologies. Projects should aim to generate actionable advice, guidelines, or recommendations for healthcare practitioners, pet care professionals, and policymakers. Applicants are encouraged to address emerging and underexplored areas such as therapy animal welfare, cross-cultural aspects of the human-animal bond, and the health impacts of animal companionship in diverse or underserved populations.

International institutions and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply, provided they comply with ethical standards and submission guidelines. Funding decisions are typically announced by mid-August following the review process.
