THET has announced a third round of grants under the Africa Grants Programme (AGP) with support from Johnson & Johnson.
The AGP supports the training of health workers in low- and middle-income countries, through engaging established partnerships between health organisations in the UK and Ireland and their counterparts in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The aims of the AGP are to save and improve the lives of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa (in particular women and children), prevent disease in vulnerable populations and strengthen the health workforce in Africa. THET and J&J are particularly interested in projects which affect systemic change and contribute to sustainable outcomes and impact.
THET welcomes grant applications to strengthen the healthcare workforce in one of the following two areas:
- Stream 1: Essential Surgical and Anaesthetic Care
- This stream will focus on reducing morbidity and mortality from conditions requiring essential surgical intervention and/or enhancing patient safety as a result of improved anaesthetic care through the training of relevant health workers. The aim of this stream is to improve the access to, and availability of, quality surgery and/or anaesthetic care (particularly for maternal, neonatal or paediatric surgical conditions).
- Stream 2: Community Healthcare
- This stream will focus on increasing the availability and quality of essential healthcare (including attended births) and health information to underserved populations, particularly women and children, by training those who work and serve in the community. The stream will focus on the training of cadres working in the community (Clinical Officers, Community Health Workers, etc.), which is in line with the national strategy and policies in-country. Partners will work at the rural and district level, outside of the central hospital systems.
Geographic Focus
- There are 13 priority countries for this round of the AGP.
- Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia (including Somaliland), Togo.
- THET will also consider exceptional applications from other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where the project and partnership matches the criteria, though priority will be given to those working in the above countries.
Funding Information
Grants are available for periods of between six and sixteen months, and will begin from 1 st May 2019. All project activity must be completed by 31st August 2020. Grants are available from £15,000 up to £50,000. THET does not guarantee that partnerships will be awarded the exact amount that they have applied for.
Eligibility Criteria
- The UK/Irish Lead Partner must be either a UK or Irish registered charity that is involved in health education or health delivery activities, OR a recognised UK or Irish health delivery institution, health education institution or professional association (including regulatory bodies).
- The UK or Irish lead partner will be responsible for signing the grant contract and overall delivery and reporting of the project. The full responsibilities of the lead UK/Irish partner include:
- Signing the AGP contract with THET
- Receiving the grant funds and managing them in accordance with the contract
- Delivering project activities
- Maintaining financial records
- Reporting on finance and grant activity to THET (activity reports are expected to be written by the partnership as a whole but coordinated by the UK/Irish lead partner)
- Ensuring grant finances are audited as part of the institution’s annual audit
- Taking responsibility (as laid out in the contract) for all security, insurance and registration matters related to those travelling / working on behalf of the project, and ensuring that appropriate safeguarding policies are in place.
- The UK or Irish Lead Partner must work in partnership with a LMIC organisation based in sub-Saharan Africa, preferably in one of the specified countries. The LMIC Lead Partner must be a not for profit institution based in an eligible African country that is involved in health education or health delivery, OR a recognised national health delivery institution, health education institution or professional association.
- Applications from a single organisation will not be eligible.
- The responsibilities of the LMIC partner institution will include:
- Delivering project activities
- Coordinating partnership activities in-country
- Associated financial and narrative reporting.
