The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) and the Global Fund are pleased to invite interested journalists, based in a selection of African countries benefiting from the support of the Breaking Down Barriers initiative, to submit their applications to participate in this new training opportunity.
The TRF and the Global Fund are joining forces to tackle barriers to health services that are related to human rights. This important new partnership aims to promote the Global Fund’s human rights work under the ‘Breaking Down Barriers’ initiative (Lifting the Barriers), helping journalists raise awareness of how stigma, gender inequalities and discrimination constitute barriers to accessing health services for some of the most vulnerable populations in the world.
The FTR will offer a full-time, five-day online training program in French, combining live video sessions and offline work, with the aim of strengthening journalistic skills and deepening knowledge of barriers to health services related to human rights. The program will include a set of interactive online sessions, expert briefings and exercises, to foster a highly practical, challenging and relevant training experience.
Format
- During the five days of full-time training, participants will come together each day to attend a mix of live group sessions, group work and offline work, and to listen to expert speakers. There will also be times reserved for individual sessions with the trainers of the FTR.
- A forum will be created to allow further discussion and networking between participating journalists and Global Fund civil society partners who will take part in the media training delivered in parallel.
- At the end of the training, participants will present ideas for topics for the opportunity to participate in a mentoring program.
Program Details: March 8-12, 2021
- Five daily sessions with FTR trainers, including online and offline modules involving guest speakers, presentations, question and answer sessions, exercises and group work.
- Access to FTR trainers for additional mentoring tailored to individual needs.
- One-off exercises and short- term activities
- Participants should ensure that they will be available full time to participate in the training week, including attending the live sessions and performing the associated exercises and preparatory work.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors working for media outlets based in the following countries: Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Tunisia.
- Applicants must have a minimum of two years of professional experience and must explain in their application why they will benefit from their participation in this training and how they intend to use the knowledge acquired in their professional activity.
- Once selected, applicants will also be asked to provide a letter from their editor supporting their participation in the program, including a commitment to publish the topic they will achieve if they participate in the mentoring portion of the training. This letter will only be requested by the FTR once candidates have been selected for training.
- Applicants must have Internet access with a minimum speed of 1MB / second. Candidates will also need to have access to a computer to participate in the training; it will not be possible to take part in the training from a mobile phone or smartphone.
- The Thomson Reuters Foundation will contribute to the costs of data consumption of the participants.
