The Columbia University is currently accepting applications for the Global Freedom of Expression Prizes to recognize legal decisions and legal services worldwide that strengthen freedom of expression by promoting international legal norms for the protection of human rights.
The first of their kind, these prizes are unique for recognizing the remarkable achievements of those who protect and strengthen freedom of expression worldwide but also serve to inspire and promote the essential work they undertake.
These prizes are awarded every two years. Nominations from around the world are now open for the 2024 edition. Anyone can nominate court decisions or legal services that have had a recognizable impact on freedom of expression and information. Self-nominations are also welcomed. Nominations are judged by an independent panel of experts in law, advocacy, journalism, and human rights.
Award Categories
- Significant Legal Ruling: the prize shall recognize a judgment or decision rendered anywhere in the world that has advanced or strengthened a global understanding and international standards of Freedom of Expression and Information. While decisions from any year may be nominated, priority will be given to recent decisions, most notably those rendered in 2022 and 2023.
- Excellence in Legal Services: the prize shall recognize a legal brief, legal amicus brief or legal defense presented anywhere in the world that has advanced or strengthened a global understanding and international norms of Freedom of Expression and Information. While legal services from any year may be nominated, priority will be given to recent legal services, most notably those rendered in 2022 and 2023.

- Nominees from around the world are eligible.
Conditions/Qualifications of Candidates
- The judicial ruling, judicial decision, legal brief or legal defense shall:
- demonstrate sound legal reasoning and an advanced legal understanding of the freedom of expression and information issues under consideration;
- demonstrate a global understanding of freedom of expression and information by reference to laws, standards, policies, or decisions regarding freedom of expression; the references may be international and/or regional standards and interpretations of freedom of expression and information, and/or decisions from other jurisdictions;
- and protect freedom of expression or information, either with regard to international standards or with reference to case jurisdiction.
- The nominees shall have established a reputation for integrity and commitment to human rights, rule of law and legal excellence.
