Climate Research Opportunity on Coastal Agriculture and Aquaculture

Deadline: 10-May-2026

The Blue Carbon + is offering applications to support advancing scientific understanding of climate change mitigation benefits linked to coastal agriculture and aquaculture systems.

The focus areas of this opportunity include saltmarsh agriculture, mangrove-positive shrimp production, mangrove-positive mud crab production, and seagrass-positive sea cucumber production, with priorities centered on assessing blue carbon and biodiversity benefits, identifying knowledge gaps, designing and implementing research studies, contributing to life cycle assessments, and informing carbon and biodiversity crediting methodologies.

The funded research will contribute to both short-term and long-term outcomes, including informing immediate project decisions and advancing global scientific knowledge through open-access outputs. The project duration can extend up to two years, with initial emphasis on saltwater agriculture before expanding to other models such as shrimp, mud crab, and sea cucumber systems.

The total funding available for this opportunity is up to $280,000 USD, which covers stipend or salary, laboratory analysis, field supplies, and up to $10,000 USD allocated for travel reimbursements over the project period. The budget must align with the proposed research scope and include justified cost estimates.

Eligibility is open to individual researchers as well as teams or research groups, with early-career researchers strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those who have completed a PhD within the past three years. Applicants must hold a PhD in biogeochemistry, ecology, or a related field, or possess equivalent research experience, along with at least five years of experience in blue carbon research. They should demonstrate expertise in carbon measurement and accounting, have access to laboratory facilities, possess strong analytical and communication skills, and be able to travel internationally for fieldwork. Additional desirable qualifications include familiarity with aquaculture systems, carbon accounting methodologies, and life cycle assessments.
