The Rhodes Scholars Southern Africa Forum (RSSAF) is currently inviting applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa for its 2017 Michaelmas Term Grant program with an aim to promote and support programs of economic, political and social development in sub-Saharan Africa.
RSSAF aims to channel the resources raised from scholar stipend deductions and other fundraising activities, to support projects primarily for poor and vulnerable groups in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Grant Information
The funding varies between (the equivalent of) £500 and £1500.
Eligibility Criteria
- Organisations eligible for RSSAF grants must:
- Be operating in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Projects in countries affected by the legacy of Cecil Rhodes are especially encouraged to apply
- Target poor and vulnerable groups with programmes of social, political, and economic development
- Have some sort of formal organisational structure
- Demonstrate some level of community buy-in
- RSSAF funding is open to any not-for-profit organization which shares the objects of RSSAF.
- Priority will be given to projects that seek to support sustainable approaches to community-based development, as defined by anticipated long-term benefits to the community. Once-off events are generally not funded unless they have long term benefits and are part of a long term programme of activities by the organization.
- Priority will be given to projects which are less likely to secure funding from large donors.
Selection Criteria
The RSSAF committee will use the following criteria in evaluating applications:
- Contribution to promote and support programmes of economic, political, and social development with particular emphasis on improving the lives of poor and vulnerable people
- Feasibility of the project: applications must have clear and achievable objectives and demonstrate that the aims of the project can be accomplished within the resources requested and the time frame proposed. In cases of multiple donors for projects, applicants will be asked to provide details of additional funding
- Accountability: applicants must demonstrate reliability in serving project beneficiaries and supporting stated community needs. This may be assessed through a review of the applicant’s history and budget or additional correspondence.
